Sky Sports and Boxxer return on 31 March for an all-British heavyweight clash; Fabio Wardley vs Frazer Clarke for the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight titles.
Fabio Wardley vs Frazer Clarke
The grudge match between Wardley and Clarke has been brewing since the Summer of 2023. Frazer Clarke’s management team petitioned for their fighter to be named mandatory challenger to Fabio Wardley, and the British Boxing Board of Control duly obliged. On the day of purse bids Frazer Clarke withdrew from the contest, and the planned bout fell apart. A difference of opinion between Clarke’s management team 258 and his promoters Boxxer led to the bout falling apart.
Free-agent Fabio Wardley opted against continuing his long standing association with Matchroom Boxing, and signed for Queensberry to compete in Saudi Arabia. Wardley vs David Adeleye for four different championships featured as the chief support to Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou. Wardley comprehensively defeated his opponent via KO in an attention-grabbing bout, with the pair going viral after Adeleye’s entourage attacked Wardley at the press conference during the build-up.
Frazer Clarke picked up a Points Decision over veteran Mariusz Wach. It wasn’t a crowd-pleasing performance but Clarke acknowledged his need to go 10 rounds for the first time in his career. Frazer Clarke had a further bout in 2023 when he stopped Dave Allen via TKO, picking up the biggest victory of his career.
Both Fabio Wardley and Frazer Clarke enter as undefeated British heavyweights. Wardley has had the superior pro career (17-0, 16 KO’s) but Frazer Clarke (8-0, 6 KO’s) has an Olympic Bronze medal and a superior amateur pedigree. Both fighters are signed to Boxxer for this contest and the champion Wardley will enter as the A-side.
Rest of the Card
UK promoters Boxxer are upping the stakes in 2024 and have delivered potentially one of the best UK cards of the year.
The undercard includes a further heavyweight contest with Alen Babić vs Steve Robinson. Babic is coming off a first round KO defeat for the WBC Bridgerweight title, and has moved up to heavyweight for his comeback.
Florian Marku vs Chris Kongo is also included on the card. The pair previously had an altercation at a press conference that saw Marku push Kongo across a stage.
Viddal Riley vs Mikael Lawal will be a 10 round Cruiserweight contest. Riley enters unbeaten with Lawal coming off a recent defeat to British champion Isaac Chamberlain.
Callum Simpson and Ben Whittaker will also appear on the Wardley Clarke card.
