Michael Hunter vs Cassius Chaney headlines Don King’s card in Miami this June for the WBA Interim World Heavyweight championship. The show will also feature, if he shows up, Adrian Broner vs Blair Cobbs.
Michael Hunter vs Cassius Chaney
Michael Hunter (22-1-2) has his opportunity to climb back to the top of the Heavyweight division as he challenges Cassius Chaney (23-1). The winner of the bout will become WBA Interim Heavyweight champion, leaving them in-line for a shot at WBA Regular champion Mahmoud Charr.
Michael Hunter had climbed the ranks of the Heavyweight division but inactivity meant he didn’t get the big fights he targeted. Hunter failed to compete in 2022 and fought just once last year, picking up a TKO victory over Mexican journeyman Miguel Cubos.
Hunter competed again in Mexico earlier this year, this time defeating stronger opposition in Ignacio Esparza. Several weeks after this, viral footage emerged of Hunter losing an exhibition bout that won’t be recorded on his official record.
Cassius Chaney won his opportunity by defeating American Heavyweight Trevor Bryan on a Don King show back in 2023. Chaney scored a vicious KO in round 7 that left Bryan needing medical attention and causing immediate worry in the aftermath of the fight.
Chaney hasn’t fought elite-level opposition and has a sole Split Decision loss to George Arias on his record.
Adrien Broner vs Blair Cobbs
Adrian Broner (35-4-1) is unusually advertised for this show “if he shows up”, according to the official event poster. Should Broner appear he will face Blair Cobbs (16-1-1).
Broner last fought in June 2023 where he recorded a victory over Bill Hutchinson. He has targeted a return to world title glory but a string of unusual behaviour out of the ring makes that seem unlikely.
