Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall Start Time and Undercard

The long-awaited rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall is set for 27 April 2024. Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall was fought back in 2022 with Josh Taylor securing a highly controversial Split Decision. Hate Runs Deep refers to the 26 months Catterall has wanted a rematch against the former Undisputed champion, and his wish has now been granted.

The First Fight – Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall

Josh Taylor (19-1, 13 KO’s) and Jack Catterall (28-1, 13 KO’s) initially met in Glasgow back in February 2022. Taylor entered as the Undisputed champion of the Super Lightweight division, defending his championships from the WBC, IBF, WBA and WBO for the first time. Taylor had defeated Jose Ramirez in Las Vegas back in 2021 to capture all 4 titles. Jack Catterall entered as a comparative unknown. He had tight victories over Tyrone McKenna and Ohara Davies but had been unheralded in the division.

The first Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall was a tight affair, at least according to the scorecards. Josh Taylor appeared to be outclassed in the contest and suffered two cuts and a knockdown across 12 rounds. Catterall emerged largely unscathed.

Taylor recorded a shock Split Decision with judge Ian John-Lewis scoring it in Taylor’s favour by 3 rounds. The other two other judges scored it tighter with Howard Foster giving it to Jack Catterall by a round and Victor Loughlin favouring Josh Taylor by a single point.

Josh Taylor vs Catterall Undisputed title clash

There was widespread outrage over the scorecards and Jack Catterall being denied an Undisputed championship. Judge Ian John-Lewis was downgraded by the BBBofC in the aftermath of the contest, and would leave his role following the demotion. You can read more on that below.

The Aftermath – Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall 1

Attempts were made to make Josh Taylor vs Jack Catterall 2, but these fell through. Boxxer attempted to make a rematch between the pair until a Josh Taylor injury scuppered the contest. Josh Taylor would also have to vacate three of his four championships, and was left retaining just the WBO World title.

A bizarre decision from Boxxer to allow a deal to slip between Taylor and Catterall meant Josh Taylor was required to complete his mandatory bout or lose his final world title. Josh Taylor faced Teofimo Lopez in Las Vegas where he lost his WBO World title via Unanimous Decision.

Jack Catterall ditched his promoters Boxxer in favour of Matchroom Boxing. Catterall fought twice in 2023 defeating Darragh Foley in Manchester and Jorge Linares in Liverpool via Unanimous Decision. He worked himself into a number 1 position with the IBF, but instead continued to target Taylor Catterall 2.

Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall Speak Ahead of Rematch

“I’ve never run from anyone in my life, especially not Jack Catterall,” Taylor said. “He has spent the last two years running from promoter to promoter while living off my name. Jack should be careful what he wishes for because he’s getting battered on April 27. I am going to enjoy every second of this. See you soon, Jack.”

“I’ve wanted this fight since the moment the scorecards got read out in Glasgow,” Catterall said. “A few people say ‘move on Jack’, and that’s easy to say to when you’re not in my position. I get asked every day of my life multiple times a day, ‘when are you fighting Taylor again?’. This isn’t about belts, this is personal to me, and I can’t wait to get my hands on him. I don’t like him, I don’t respect him and on April 27 I’m going to end him.”
