HANEY VS PROGRAIS : LIVE ON 09 DECEMBER 2023

WHO IS BOXING?

On 09 December 2023, live from the Chase Center in San Francisco, Devin Haney (30-0) takes on Regis Prograis (29-1) for the WBC World Super Lightweight Championship. Regis Prograis enters as the B-side despite being the champion as Devin Haney bids to become a two weight world champion. The fight is promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, and broadcast on DAZN.

Devin Haney became the Undisputed Lightweight Champion of the world when he defeated Vasyl Lomachenko back in May, and is moving up in weight to capture further gold. Prograis recently signed to Matchroom Boxing, and had a somewhat successful defence when he Danielito Zorrilla via Split Decision in June 2023. I say somewhat, as the bout itself was a terrible clash of styles. Zorrilla remained on the outside, and Prograis never really able to close the distance, although Zorilla was on the canvas in the third round. It led to a disappointing bout with scorecards 9 and 7 in favour of Prograis, and the third scorecard favouring Zorrilla by one.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BUILD-UP?

Not too much has happened in the build-up so far. The most polarising piece of news has been that the fight is PPV in USA, but part of a DAZN subscription in a lot of other territories.

WHO IS THE FAVOURITE FOR THE HANEY VS PROGRAIS?

Undefeated and Undisputed Devin Haney enters the bout as the favourite. Haney managed to navigate past Lomachenko and score 2 away points victories against George Kambosos Jr. Haney on points looks the most likely outcome, especially as all his fights since becoming a Lightweight Champion have gone the full 12 rounds. Haney’s last stoppage was 8 fights ago, back in 2019 for the Interim Lightweight Championship against Zaur Abdullaev.

For Prograis, who has 24 KO’s in 29 wins, a knockout seems the best route to victory. Prograis had 4 consecutive stoppages prior to his bout with Zorrilla, so he can certainly stop opponents. Prograis is also a natural Super Lightweight, and has more experience at the weight than Haney, who is stepping up to this division for the first time.

WHAT DO THE BOOKMAKERS THINK ABOUT THE HANEY VS PROGRAIS?

Devin Haney has been made the heavy favourite for the bout, with odds of 1/4. Regis Prograis is 3/1 to win outright as the defending champion.

Haney by KO/TKO/DQ is 13/2.
Haney by decision/TD is 2/5
Prograis by KO/TKO/DQ is 11/2
Prograis by decision is 13/2
