WHO IS BOXING?
On 02 December 2023, at a location to be determined, Ryan Garcia (23-1) returns to the ring for the first time since his defeat to Gervonta Davis when he faces off against Oscar Duarte (26-1-1). The card is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, and will be broadcast live on DAZN.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BUILD-UP TO GARCIA VS DUARTE?
Garcia has had a public fallout with Oscar De La Hoya since then, with the relationship appearing to sour in the aftermath of Garcia’s loss to Davis. Garcia publicly accused De La Hoya of a lack of support after the loss, and is likely to move to a new promoter in the near future. For the time being though, he remains under contract with Golden Boy.
Oscar Duarte poses a legitimate threat to Garcia, who already has two stoppage wins in 2023, the last being a destructive performance against D’Angelo Keyes back in May. Duarte’s only loss came fighting for the WBC Continental Americas Lightweight belt in 2019, and he should be a game opponent for Garcia. Oscar Duarte is also a member of the Golden Boy stable of fighters, and will be hoping to upset the odds and inflict back-to-back losses on Garcia, limiting any damage to Golden Boy when Garcia leaves and capturing the limelight for himself.
