Ebanie Bridges vs Avril Mathie has been announced for the undercard of Devin Haney vs Regis Prograis on 09 December 2023. The bouts see Bridges (9-1) defend her IBF World Bantamweight crown against fellow Australian Mathie (8-1-1), the second defence of her belt. Bridges has been inactive in 2023 and last fought against another Australian in Shannon O’ Connell in Leeds last December.
Taking to Twitter/X, Bridges promised to smash the pretty face of Mathie, with Mathie claiming she will have “exploded the right tit” of Bridges first. Naturally many members of the boxing community are salavating at the weigh-in, including comments for a pre-fight mud wrestle.
But there’s also some intrigue in the Bridges vs Mathie bout beyond the appearances. Bridges hasn’t been as active as some people had hoped, and a bout between her and Nina Hughes has failed to materialise. Mathie lost a wide 9-1 Unanimous Decision to Ramla Ali earlier in the year, and she will enter as a heavy underdog. Mathie’s most significant win in her career was against Judit Hachbold (5-14), so she will need to step up levels to dethrone Ebanie Bridges.
