Boxing on TV in January 2024

Boxing has never thrived in the month of January, but boxing on TV in January 2024 may just finally buck that trend.

A month that is typically filled with inactivity has been energised by two cards from Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy promotions. Vergil Ortiz Jr has been inactive since 2022, and makes a long-awaited return. Jaime Munguia vs John Ryder may be an early FOTY contender.

Munguia is undefeated after barely surviving Derevyanchenko last May, but Ryder has hit a purple patch after surviving 12 rounds against Canelo Alvarez, having surprisingly beaten Zach Parker to earn a mandatory position.

Top Rank’s first major card of 2024 will see Artur Beterbiev vs Callum Smith in a long-delayed bout for the WBC Light Heavyweight title. The contest was set for 2023 until Beterbiev withdrew with injury, postponing the contest.

Boxxer in the UK have been active early, announcing Jonas vs Mayer for January, followed by Buatsi vs Azeez in February 2024. Jonas vs Mayer also includes a solid undercard featuring two title fights and Jack Massey and Karriss Artingsall in action.

Matchroom announced their first show for 27 January 2024, returning to Northern Ireland on the back of Conlan vs Gill in December 2023.

Misfits X Series 12 starts the year in Leeds, with a women’s title bout between AJ Bunker vs Elle Brooke in a rematch being the only bout I recognise without Google.

Off major TV outlets, Artem Dalakan vs Seigo Akui for the WBA Flyweight title headlines a world title double-header in Japan on 23 January 2024. Teraji vs Canizales is the Chief Support for the Unified Light Flyweight titles.
