Shakiel Thompson vs Vladimir Georgiev Preview and Undercard

GBM Sports return for their fourth live show of 2024. Shakiel Thompson vs Vladimir Georgiev headlines a card that also features the return of British Heavyweight Hughie Fury to the ring. GBM’s Coming of Age show airs live from talkSPORT and takes place at Magna in Rotherham England.

Shakiel Thompson vs Vladimir Georgiev

Unbeaten Sheffield Middleweight Shakiel Thompson (11-0) challenges Vladimir Georgiev (12-3) in his first championship bout. Thompson scored a TKO victory over Gino Kanters earlier in the year on a GBM Sports show and now steps up to 10 rounds for the first time. The vacant IBF European and WBO Global Middleweight belts are up for grabs.

Shakiel Thompson was once of GBM Sports early signees and headlines his second show for the fledgling promotion.

Bulgarian Vladimir Georgiev enters the contest with two consecutive victories and recently captured the Bulgarian Super Middleweight title. Georgiev suffered his first defeat in a three round Prizefighter-esque tournament against Zak Chelli in 2020. He returned to the UK again in 2022 but was unsuccessful over 8 rounds, losing a Points Decision to unbeaten Aaron Sutton in Bristol.

Hughie Fury vs Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko

Heavyweight Hughie Fury (26-3) returns to the ring for the first time since 2021. Fury was last in action in October 2021 when he forced Christian Hammer to retire at the end of round 5. He’s been inactive since then with Covid cited as the reason for his inactivity.

Hughie Fury’s three defeats came against top Heavyweight contenders. Fury lost a Majority Decision to Joseph Parker in 2017, and suffered a Unanimous Decision loss to Kubrat Pulev a year later. His final loss came in 2019 to Alexander Povetkin.

Fury will return in a 6 round contest. He faces Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko (10-15-1) who has been active fighting in the UK. Dovbyshchenko picked up a surprise TKO victory over Matty Harris on a Wasserman Boxing show, but has Points Decision losses to Tom Schwarz, Jeamie TKV and unbeaten Heavyweight Moses Itauma.

Rest of the Card

Nicola Hopewell (4-1) vs Gemma Ruegg (7-10-1) will contest the vacant Commonwealth Flyweight title. Hopewell previously fought Emma Dolan at GBM Sports for the title at a GBM Sports show last year and now receives a second opportunity. Reugg hasn’t won any of her last four bouts and enters as an underdog.

Recent GBM Sports signees Kieran Molloy (7-0), Harvey Lambert (3-0) and Tiernan Bradley (8-0) are also in action.

The show takes place on Saturday 20 April 2024.
