On Thursday 08 February 2024 Top Rank boxing present Lopez vs Ortiz for the WBO Junior Welterweight title. The bout is being held in Las Vegas on the Thursday prior to the Super Bowl, and airs in the USA via ESPN+.
Teofimo Lopez (19-1) is making the first defence of his belt since defeating Josh Taylor last year at in his hometown at Madison Square Garden. ‘The Takeover’ retired in the aftermath of that contest, but was widely expected to continue boxing after he failed to vacate his title. Teofimo Lopez next fight is against Jamaine Ortiz in the first defence of his WBO title.
Teo’s opponent is fellow American Jamaine Ortiz (17-1-1). Ortiz’s sole defeat was a point loss to Vasyl Lomachenko in 2022. Ortiz fought just once since then, winning a 10 round contest against Antonio Moran in September 2023.
Ortiz doesn’t carry the same power as the champion Teofimo Lopez. 13 of Lopez’s 19 wins have come via KO, whereas Ortiz has just 8 KO’s from his 17 wins. Both fighters have defeats on their record, and both have been knocked down in the past. Lopez was knocked down in the first round against George Kambosos Jr, his sole defeat. Ortiz took two knockdowns in a Majority Draw to Joseph Adorno.
Keyshawn Davis vs Jose Pedraza is expected to feature as the chief supporting bout. George Acosta vs Rene Tellez Giron also features on the card.
