Jaime Munguia defeated Liverpool’s John Ryder in the main event of Golden Boy promotions show held in Phoenix, Arizona.
Unbeaten Super Middleweight Jaime Munguia defended his Silver WBC Super Middleweight championship against recent Canelo opponent ‘The Gorilla’ John Ryder. Munguia entered as the A-side and the heavy favourite for the bout, with John Ryder having odds of 5/1 to win by decision.
Jaime Munguia dominated the majority of the rounds before securing victory in round 9. Munguia put John Ryder down with a knockdown in the second round, and continued the onslaught with another knockdown in round 4.
Ryder improved after the second knockdown and pressured Munguia with his own attacks. Munguia absorbed the damage from John Ryder, but he wasn’t able to contribute much offence and allowed himself to lose a few rounds. A decision loss for Jamie Munguia was never likely though.
Munguia was firmly back on top in round 9. Munguia knocked Ryder down for a third and fourth time, before the referee eventually accepted the retirement from Ryder’s corner. The result of Munguia vs Ryder is an emphatic TKO victory for Munguia.
The result leaves Jamie Munguia 43-0, having bested Saul Canelo Alvarez’s result over John Ryder. John Ryder moves to 32-7 having been stopped for just the second time in his career. Following high-profile losses to Jaime Munguia and Canelo Alvarez, 35 year old Ryder may now opt to call time on his professional career. Ryder has indicated he would retire if he lost to Munguia, and is unlikely to seek a route back to the top of the division.
Mexican Jamie Munguia spoke briefly about this next opponent following the end of the fight. Munguia is keen on facing Saul Canelo Alvarez next, although he joins a long queue of boxing including David Benavidez Jr waiting for their opportunity.
On the undercard, Gabriela Fundora retained her IBF title via TKO in round 10 over Christina Cruz. Oscar Collazo also retained his WBO Minimumweight World title over Reyneris Gutierrez in round 3.
Golden Boy return next with Joseph Diaz Jr vs Jesus Perez. They also have another Fight Night scheduled for 2024 too.
