Jack Catterall vs Jorge Linares Start Time and Preview

CATTERALL VS LINARES LIVE ON: 21 October 2023

WHO IS BOXING?

On 21 October 2023 in Liverpool, Jack Catterall (27-1) takes on Jorge Linares (47-8) in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing card, broadcast live on DAZN.

Jack Catterall is a fighter born in Chorley, who notably faced Josh Taylor in February 2022 and suffered a scandalous defeat on the scorecards. Catterall has lost momentum since then, chasing a Josh Taylor fight with his former promoter Boxxer, he failed to secure the fight as Taylor fought and lost to Teofimo Lopez. Catterall was sat on the sidelines until May 2023, when the defeated Darragh Foley via Unanimous Decision on the undercard of Mauricio Lara vs Leigh Wood 2.

Jorge Linares ‘El Nino de Oro Golden Boy’ is a veteran who was held world championships at three different weights. He arrives at this fight in the twilight of his career, having lost his last three contests, and remains without a win since Valentines Day 2020. He is unlikely to be looking beyond this contest, and with 8 defeats to his name already, this might be one of his final bouts regardless of the outcome.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BUILD-UP TO CATTERALL VS LINARES?

There has been widespread disappointment from Jack Catterall fans. Having faced Darragh Foley in a comeback bout in May, there was an expectancy he would challenge Regis Prograis, a fellow Matchroom fighter, until a bout with Devin Haney emerged. There was another possibility of facing O’Hara Davies, but he has been elevated to a number one contender and awaits a world championship bout. Finally, his long mooted rematch with Josh Taylor isn’t happening, although his advisor Sam Jones has hinted at a big fight in February 2024. Could this be the bout we finally want?

There has also been growing discussion about whether Jorge Linares has the capability to remain in these fights, despite coming up short in his recent bouts and his ever advancing age.

Shabaz Masoud withdrew from his bout with Jose Sanmartin after the weigh-in, on the eve on the fight. A statement from Matchroom Boxing cited ‘illness’ as the reason behind the withdrawal.

WHO IS THE FAVOURITE FOR CATTERALL VS LINARES?

Jack Catterall is the heavy favourite heading into the contest. He is currently priced at 1/8 for the victory, indicating the bookmarkers consider this fight to be east work for Catterall. Backing Linares will give you odds of 5/1 to win by any method of victory.

ANY HIGHLIGHTS ON THE UNDERCARD?

Aqib Fiaz vs. Reece Bellotti. Reece Belotti shocked many in the boxing world when he bested Youssef Khoumari over 10 rounds, as Khoumari had one defeat to his name, whereas ‘Bomber’ Belotti had five. Belotti has faced some quality operators such as Raymond Ford and Jordan Gill and come up short, but he remains a real threat at a lower level. Aqib Fiaz is unbeaten, but he was knocked down in his last contest and had to cling on for the final 2 rounds. He hasn’t fought a 12 rounder before, and this seems ripe for another Belotti upset.

ANYTHING ELSE?

This fight clashes with Sky Sports and Boxxer’s UK card, which was topped by Dan Azeez vs Joshua Buatsi, but has been replaced by Lawal vs Chamberlain.
