GBM Sports hosted their second ever show in Sheffield on Friday 09 February 2024. The 10 bout card included Thomas Essomba vs Elie Konki for the European title, Shakiel Thompson vs Gino Kanters and Stevi Levy in a Silver European title bout.

Liam Cameron vs Harry Matthews
Liam Cameron closed the show with a first round KO over journeyman Harry Matthews. Cameron scored a knockdown 2 minutes into the contest. Matthews suffered a second knockdown in the final seconds of the bout and took the full 10 count. Cameron has now recorded two victories since returning from a 4 year ban which ended in 2023.
Shakiel Thompson vs Gino Kanters
Unbeaten British Middleweight Shakiel Thompson scored a stoppage victory in round 3 over Gino Kanters. Thompson outclassed his opponent from the start, scoring knockdowns in rounds 1, 2, and 3 before the fight was waved off. Kanters showed no desire to carry out after the third knockdown despite being the count. Thompson moves to 11-0 with 9 KO’s on his record, and promoter Izzy Asif gave him high praise after the fight.
Thomas Essomba vs Elie Konki
Thomas Essomba narrowly defeated Elie Konki via Split Decision to retain his European Bantamweight title. The tight affair went the full 12 round distance with Essomba starting strong and Konki picking up the latter rounds. Konki hit the canvas on 3 occasions but each time the referee ruled it a slip. Neither man emerged as a clear winner, and Essomba was able to pick up a Split Decision in his hometown.
Stevi Levy vs Dorota Norek
Stevi Levy captured the EBU European Silver Super Bantamweight title via Majority Decision over Polish Dorota Norek. Levy was in control of the bout and Norek seemed to tire as the rounds wore on. Norek did throw everything at Levy in the final round but it came too late. The Majority Decision was surprising considering Norek didn’t appear to win 5 rounds, but the other judges agreed and Levy was declared winner.
Levy vs Norek was made after Ebonie Jones withdrew from her planned bout against Stevi Levy.
Rest of the card
Faraqat Ali vs Kevin Trana fought to a draw, with Ali failing to secure a victory for the first time in his career. He moves to 8-0-1.
Owen Durnan brought a lot of fans for his second professional contest. Owen Durnan vs Fonz Alexander brought the most noise from the crowd and as Durnan eased his way to a 4 round points victory.
Nohman Hussain vs Eliecer Quezada saw both fighters suffer a knockdown as Hussain picked up a victory 38-36 over 4 rounds.
Naphtali Nembhard vs Tom Ramsden saw a 4 round Points Decision for Nembhard as Ramsden spent large portions of the fight goading his opponent.
Red Johnson vs Genadij Krajevskij saw Johnson knock his opponent down in round 4 on his way to a 40-35 points decision victory. Johnson looked aggressive throughout and spiteful trying to stop ‘Baltic Bomber’ and spent the fight hunting Krajevskij.
Joe Hayden vs George Rogers opened the 10 fight card on GBM Sports YouTube channel, with Hayden picking up a Points Decision over 4 rounds.
GBM Sports Sheffield Show notes
The show was held in Sheffield at the Canon Medical Arena/Park Community Arena. This is the second time GBM Sports have hosted boxing at the venue, and they are currently the only promoter to hold shows here since the venue opened in late 2023. Fightzone are set for a show in April 2024.
Attendance for GBM’s Thompson vs Kanters appeared to be 80%+ of the capacity. There are no confirmed ticket sales numbers, but the majority of the venue was full. Tickets cost £50 or £90 for ringside.
talkSPORT boxing YouTube channel broadcast the main card. GBM Sports YouTube channel broadcast the earlier undercard. Adam Smith returned to the commentary booth for the first time since leaving Sky Sports.
Dominic Ingle, Sunny Edwards, Dave Allen and Dalton Smith were all working as cornermen for various fighters throughout the night. Edwards and Dalton Smith were in the corner of Thomas Essomba, and Dave Allen had various fighters on the card including Stevi Levy.
Beer on tap ran out by the time Faraqat Ali vs Kevin Trana were fighting. We were left drinking warm bottled beer at £5 a go. Carling was £6 a pint on tap when available.
