Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn reacted to the news of the postponement of Fury vs Usyk for the Undisputed title. Hearn spoke to IFL after the news of the postponement broke online and suggested the contest could take place in April or May 2024.
Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk was postponed earlier today following an injury to Fury in his training camp. The cancellation of Fury vs Usyk with just 15 days to go has led to questions on whether The Ring of Fire event will still go ahead, or whether Usyk will seek a new opponent.
Eddie Hearn commented on the future of Fury vs Usyk. Fury vs Usyk is set to appear in just a few months if the Matchroom promoter is correct.
“Speaking with my view I expect it just to be rescheduled, whether that’s April or May, something like that” said Hearn regarding the possibility of Oleksandr Usyk taking an interim bout while Fury is injured. “I do not believe Usyk will fight somebody else on February 17th”.
There had been murmurings of IBF Mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic challenges Oleksandr Usyk on February 17th, with the winner going on to face Tyson Fury. Other mooted ideas have included moving the Joshua vs Ngannou fight forward to this date, or the possibility of Zhang and Parker fighting against each other.
Eddie Hearn has ruled out the possibility of Usyk vs Hrgovic happening. Hearn added
“I do not believe Usyk will fight somebody else on February 17th”, although he doesn’t promote either fighter currently. Hearn previously had Hrgovic on his Matchroom roster but the contract expired after Day of Reckoning.
As things stand, the Ring of Fire event is currently postponed with no new headliner replacing Fury vs Usyk. New plans are expected to emerge from Riyadh Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
