Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia Preview and Undercard

An all-Mexican affair is set for Cinco De Mayo as Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia headlines Premier Boxing Champions show. The long awaited bout will pit the Undisputed champion against fellow Mexican and unbeaten Super Middleweight Jaime Munguia. The bout takes place in Las Vegas and airs live on PPV.

Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia

Saul Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2) is widely regarded as the biggest star in boxing. Canelo left Matchroom Boxing to sign a 3-fight deal with rival promoters Premier Boxing Champions. The first bout saw Canelo win a disappointing affair against Jermell Charlo, with his opponent looking to survive rather than topple the Undisputed champion. A mooted bout against his brother Jermall Charlo was scrapped, and after flirting with other promoters agreed to face Jaime Munguia, with the bout broadcast on both DAZN and Prime Video.

Canelo is continuing his tradition of boxing on Cinco De Mayo. In 2021, he destroyed Billy Joe Saunders, who is yet to return to the ring despite failing to retire. 2022 was less unsuccessful as Canelo suffered his second and most recent loss to Dimitii Bivol in Las Vegas. 2023 saw the John Ryder bout and Munguia marks the fourth consecutive bout around the holiday. Canelo also beat Daniel Jacobs in 2019 and Chavez Jr in 2017 to mark the holiday.

Jaime Munguia (43-0) stepped up as Canelo’s opponent following the impressive destruction of John Ryder. Canelo when the distance against the Liverpudlian in a dominant display, but Munguia performed even better and stopped Ryder in round 9, scoring 4 knockdowns during the bout. John Ryder also retired after the loss, which you can read more on here.

Munguia took part in arguably the best bout of 2023 when he narrowly defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko, scoring a crucial knockdown in the final round. We awarded the fight the best of 2023 in our annual boxing awards which you can read here.
