Boxing returns to Saudi Arabia on Friday 08 March 2024 as Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou headlines the first event of the current Riyadh Season. The bill in Saudi Arabia features Zhang vs Parker on the undercard, as well as world title bout further down the bill.
Anthony Joshua vs Francis Ngannou
Former unified Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is competing against former UFC Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou, with the winner potentially facing the winner of Fury vs Usyk. Turki Al-al-Sheikh announced this as part of his plan at the press conference.
Joshua underwent a rebuilding process in 2023, starting with a cumbersome points victory over Jermaine Franklin. The performance improved in his second bout of 2023 when he defeated replacement opponent Robert Helenius via KO. Joshua had been due to face Dillian Whyte who withdrew following a failed doping test. Helenius would ironically also failed a doping test after the Joshua bout.
Joshua competed for the final time in 2023 when he dismantled Otto Wallin at Day of Reckoning. Wallin lasted 5 rounds before retiring in the corner having been thoroughly beaten.
Francis Ngannou has just one professional bout to his name, his Majority Decision loss to Tyson Fury last October. Ngannou knocked down the WBC heavyweight champion, but despite impressing failed to secure victory. You can see how we re-scored the bout below:
Rest of the Card
The undercard for the event featuring the return of conquering hero Joseph Parker, who stunned Deontay Wilder at Day of Reckoning defeating him over 12 rounds. His opponent is the Chinese Heavyweight Zhilei Zhang, who defeated Joe Joyce twice in 2023.
Rey Vargas vs Nick Ball for the Featherweight World title is also included on the undercard.
Mark Chamberlain vs Gavin Gwynne will appear on the card in an all-British clash.
