Adrian Curiel vs Sivenathi Nontshinga Results

Matchroom Boxing held a show in Oaxaca Mexico on Friday 16 February 2024. The main event featured Adrian Curiel vs Sivenathi Nontshinga for the IBF World Super Flyweight championship as well as Mauricio Lara appearing on the undercard. Here are the Adrian Curiel vs Sivenathi Nontshinga results.

Adrian Curiel vs Sivenathi Nontshinga

Adrian Curiel lost his IBF World Super Flyweight championship to South African Sivenathi Nontshinga. The fight was a rematch between the pair after Curiel beat Nontshinga in 2023.

The fight was tight affair with Curiel shading the first 6 rounds. Curiel was letting his lead slip but remained in control until a knockdown in round 9 spelled the end. Nontshinga scored a heavy knockdown and Curiel wasn’t able to recover. He survived the round but had no offence left and it was just a matter of time until he fell.

Nontshinga continued to unload in combinations, and while Curiel was dodging a lot of the shots, he was hitting back and couldn’t stop Nontshinga’s momentum. The referee waved the fight off correctly with Curiel in no position to continue in round 10. Nontshinga wins via TKO.

Sivenathi Nontshinga wins 2nd IBF World championship

Sivenathi Nontshinga is now a 2-time IBF World Super Flyweight champion. Former IBF Flyweight champion Sunny Edwards expressed an interest in facing Nontshinga.

Mauricio Lara vs Daniel Lugo

Lara and Lugo fought to a 10 round Majority Draw. Lara was competing for the first time since losing his WBA title to Leigh Wood last May. Lara looked a far cry from his best having appeared to struggle with the weight again, having been stripped of his championship for failing to make a checkweight.

Mauricio Lara struggled in the middle rounds, and returned to his corner shaking his head and complaining between rounds. The 10 round distance seemed out of reach but Lara clung on to hear the final bell. Both men finished the contest bloodied from a series of head clashes.

The scorecards seemed a little generous in favour of the A-side, and Lara escapes with a Majority Draw which was the best he could have hoped for.

Post-fight, Matchroom Boxing indicated they would aim to make Lara vs Lugo rematch around May.
