Stipe Miocic Headlines Elite 2026 Croatian American Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — Two-time UFC Heavyweight World Champion Stipe Miocic, widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight in the history of mixed martial arts and the proud son of Croatian immigrants, will headline the distinguished 2026 Croatian American Sports Hall of Fame (CAS-HOF) Induction Class. The star-studded roster of athletic legends is set to be officially enshrined during a ceremony on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the American Croatian Lodge in Eastlake, Ohio.

The announcement was made jointly by the Croatian American Sports Hall of Fame, in partnership with the National Federation of Croatian Americans Cultural Foundation and its major partner, the Croatian Fraternal Union. Together, the organizations revealed a powerful list of eight new honorees whose remarkable careers span multiple generations and athletic disciplines, including mixed martial arts, professional football, collegiate and professional basketball, baseball, and Masters Olympia bodybuilding.

The CAS-HOF exists to recognize individuals of Croatian descent who have achieved true national distinction through extraordinary, elite-level accomplishments in sports. This year’s incoming class embodies that tradition at the highest possible level, uniting icons who have claimed Heisman Trophy glory, Gold Glove excellence, Super Bowl rings, NBA All-Star nods, and record-setting world championship reigns. Beyond their individual statistics and championship trophies, these eight inductees represent a profound, shared pride in their rich Croatian heritage.

Steve Rukavina, CAS-HOF Co-Chairman and President of the National Federation of Croatian Americans Cultural Foundation, emphasized the historic magnitude of the upcoming enshrinement.

"This 2026 induction class is among the most accomplished in our history," Rukavina said. "From world champions to Heisman Trophy winners and Hall of Famers, these Croatian American sports legends will be enshrined in Cleveland that evening—a night that honors not only their extraordinary careers, but the heritage that shaped them."

The Selection Committee—comprising Derek Hohn, Jerome Jurenovich, Jim Kresnik, Ken Krsolovic, Dino Mattessich, Vedran Joseph Nazor, Jim Berklan, Tom Steich, Bill Cumbelich, and Steve Rukavina—voted to enshrine a diverse and fiercely accomplished group of sports figures for 2026.

Leading the class is Stipe Miocic, born in Euclid, Ohio, to hardworking Croatian immigrant parents. Miocic carved out a legendary combat sports resume, capturing the UFC Heavyweight World Championship twice and establishing records that still define the weight class, including the most consecutive successful title defenses and the most wins in heavyweight championship bouts. Long before cementing his legacy inside the Octagon as the consensus greatest heavyweight in MMA history, Miocic demonstrated his elite athletic versatility as a Golden Gloves boxing champion and an NCAA Division I wrestler at Cleveland State University.

Joining Miocic in the 2026 class is Meri Abbado, an extraordinary IFBB professional bodybuilder. Raised in Split, Croatia, Abbado defied conventional athletic timelines by beginning her competitive bodybuilding career at the age of 46. She earned her IFBB Pro Card in 2017 and has since accumulated an astonishing 26 IFBB Pro titles. A two-time Masters World Champion in 2022 and 2024, Abbado has also qualified twice for the prestigious Masters Olympia competition, appearing in 2023 and 2025.

The class also honors legendary figures from the gridiron, starting with Fred Arbanas. Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1939, Arbanas developed into a dynamic and dominant tight end for the Dallas Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs. His exceptional play earned him six All-AFL selections and a coveted spot on the AFL All-Time Team. Over his stellar career, Arbanas hauled in 198 receptions for 3,101 yards and 34 touchdowns, playing a crucial role in capturing three AFL championships and a victory in Super Bowl IV. Following his retirement from professional football, Arbanas dedicated decades of public service to his community as a Jackson County, Missouri legislator.

Another football legend entering the Hall of Fame is UCLA quarterback Gary Beban. Born in San Francisco in 1946, Beban earned the enduring nickname "The Great One" while leading the Bruins to an impressive 24-5-2 record from 1965 to 1967. His collegiate career was highlighted by a historic 1966 Rose Bowl triumph over top-ranked Michigan State. In 1967, Beban swept individual college football’s highest honors, winning the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award while securing unanimous All-America honors before playing briefly in the NFL with Washington.

Rob Ninkovich completes the football contingent of the 2026 class. Born on February 1, 1984, in Blue Island, Illinois, Ninkovich established himself as a fierce and reliable NFL linebacker of Croatian descent. After earning All-Big Ten honors during his collegiate career at Purdue, he was selected in the 2006 NFL Draft. Ninkovich went on to enjoy an exceptional eight-season run with the New England Patriots, where he won two Super Bowls and established himself as a defensive cornerstone. Upon his retirement in 2017, his contributions were further cemented when he was named to the elite Patriots All-Dynasty Team covering the years 2001 through 2019.

Baseball is prominently represented by two iconic figures of Croatian heritage, Bobby Grich and Johnny Pesky. Born in Muskegon, Michigan, in 1949, Grich was an elite second baseman who starred for the Baltimore Orioles and the California Angels. During his stellar 17-season Major League career, Grich earned six All-Star selections, four Gold Glove awards, and a Silver Slugger award, while leading the American League in home runs in 1981. He finished his career with a .266 batting average, 224 home runs, 864 runs batted in, and a remarkable 71 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) that places him statistically alongside Major League Baseball Hall of Famers.

Johnny Pesky, born John Michael Paveskovich in Portland, Oregon, in 1919, remains one of the most beloved figures in Boston Red Sox history. The son of Croatian immigrants, Pesky was a gifted infielder who posted a stellar .307 career batting average and led the American League in hits during each of his first three major league seasons. Beyond his playing days, Pesky’s extraordinary 61-year association with the Red Sox organization as a player, manager, coach, and broadcaster made him a permanent fixture at Fenway Park, culminating in the retirement of his uniform number 6 in 2008 and the immortalization of his name via the stadium’s right field foul pole, known famously as the Pesky Pole.

The basketball world is represented by Jack Marin, a native of Farrell, Pennsylvania. Renowned for his exceptional balance of academics and athletics, Marin was a valedictorian and All-State basketball standout before leading Duke University to consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances in 1964 and 1966. Selected fifth overall in the NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets, Marin earned the nickname "Mr. Consistency" and was selected as an NBA All-Star in both 1972 and 1973. His lasting impact on the sport has previously earned him inductions into multiple halls of fame, including those at Duke, North Carolina, and his home state of Pennsylvania.

The formal enshrinement of these eight extraordinary athletes will take place before family, fans, and dignitaries at the American Croatian Lodge in Eastlake, Ohio, honoring not only their unprecedented accomplishments in sports arenas and rings, but also the enduring cultural roots that connected them to their shared heritage.
