UFC 333 Preview: High Stakes, Historical Legacies, and Championship Drama in Abu Dhabi

One way or another, history is destined to be made at UFC 333. Perhaps, given the high-stakes matchups and the sheer concentration of elite talent converging on the Etihad Arena, it will be made more than once.

The premier mixed martial arts organization returns to Abu Dhabi for a monumental card on Saturday, October 24, headlined by clashes that could reshape divisional landscapes and cement legendary legacies. From seasoned veterans seeking to fend off the relentless march of younger contenders to champions looking to restore order after grueling historical paces, the event promises high-octane action from the opening preliminary bout to the championship main card.

The broadcast schedule opens with a five-fight early preliminary card beginning at 10 a.m. ET, followed by a four-fight preliminary card at 12 p.m. ET. The marquee five-fight main card gets underway at 2 p.m. ET, with the entire event streaming live globally on Paramount+. As fighters finalize their weight cuts and media obligations in the United Arab Emirates, the MMA world turns its eyes to a card brimming with division-altering consequences.

Alexander Volkanovski vs. Movsar Evloev

In the featherweight division, Alexander Volkanovski faces the classic combat sports conundrum of getting older while the competition only grows younger, faster, and hungrier. "The Great" has done virtually everything possible in his illustrious career and has little left to prove—other than perhaps confirming his place even higher on the all-time great list than he already occupies.

However, he could not ask for a more compelling or dangerous challenge than undefeated Movsar Evloev. The surging contender has battled both inactivity and a relative lack of fan-friendly highlight-reel finishes to relentlessly earn his title shot, compiling a pristine 10-0 record inside the UFC Octagon and systematically clearing every other contender out of his path. Whether victories come inside the distance or via the judges’ scorecards, winning remains the ultimate objective at this level of the sport.

For Volkanovski, maintaining composure, keeping the fight standing, and utilizing his elite boxing to catch Evloev represents the clearest path to victory and a chance to live to fight another day as champion. Yet, Evloev’s path relies on his suffocating grappling, relentless pressure against the fence, and the ability to grind down the veteran over 25 minutes. While Evloev is known for tactical decisions rather than quick stoppages, his recent resume includes elite names like Lerone Murphy, Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen, Diego Lopes, and Dan Ige—fighters who rank among the toughest outs at 145 pounds. If Evloev manages to find a breakthrough finish against Volkanovski, whose chin has absorbed significant damage in recent bouts against Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria, it could signal the dawning of a new era at the top of the division.

Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili

The bantamweight division takes center stage as Petr Yan looks to further distance himself from past setbacks and permanently re-establish his status in the greatest-of-all-time discussions at 135 pounds. Yan’s journey back to the title picture required him to defeat three consecutive ranked opponents before delivering a career-defining performance last December to avenge a prior loss and capture championship gold for a second time.

Standing across the Octagon is Merab Dvalishvili, the man Yan defeated, who now has the opportunity to restore order and cement his own legacy as the definitive bantamweight GOAT if he can reclaim momentum in their ongoing series. Dvalishvili arguably flew too close to the sun during an ambitious 2025 campaign, attempting the unprecedented feat of successfully defending a title four times within a single calendar year. Following nearly ten months to rest, recover, and evolve physically and mentally, the question remains whether Dvalishvili can return to his overwhelming, pace-pushing ways.

While Dvalishvili thrives on giving opponents zero breathing room through relentless wrestling and cardio, Yan proved in their rematch that he can neutralize those explosive bursts and dictate the striking exchanges. Both men possess elite skills, and fans should anticipate a high-level chess match that could easily stretch to the judges’ scorecards in what promises to be an unforgettable tactical battle.

Supporting Card Highlights

Elsewhere on the stacked main card, the division-shaping action continues as rising star Lone’er Kavanagh meets Ramazan Temirov to jockey for position in an increasingly crowded and dangerous flyweight division. Kavanagh, 27, has tested himself against elite competition throughout his tenure, including a gritty battle with veteran Brandon Royval. In Temirov, he faces arguably one of the heaviest hitters at 125 pounds outside of Manel Kape, a fighter blessed with one-shot knockout power who will look to establish dominance before Kavanagh can find his rhythm.

In the heavyweight division, Alexander Volkov looks to keep his dwindling title hopes alive when he squares off against Rizvan Kuniev. Volkov has unexpectedly emerged as a fan-favorite figure following years of battling top-tier contenders, with much of the MMA community rallying behind his pursuit of a long-overdue heavyweight title opportunity. Standing in his way is Kuniev, an aggressive, high-volume up-and-comer whose relentless pace and cardio distinguish him within a division often defined by slower-paced heavyweights. Volkov will need to utilize his significant reach advantage and veteran experience to keep Kuniev from walking him down over the course of 15 minutes.

Opening the main card in explosive fashion, Aaron Pico takes on short-notice replacement Losene Keita in a sizzling featherweight showdown. Pico enters the contest following a mature, measured performance against Patricio Pitbull, but the inherent danger of his aggressive style remains a constant wildcard. With Keita stepping in to replace an injured Arnold Allen, Pico faces an opponent more than willing to take massive risks to secure a statement victory on the global stage.
