The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is set to bring a historic night of mixed martial arts to East Africa, as the promotion prepares to crown three inaugural PFL Africa tournament champions. The high-stakes championship event will take place on Saturday, December 12, at the state-of-the-art BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, marking a significant milestone for the organization’s ongoing expansion across the African continent.
The upcoming fight card will feature championship bouts across three distinct weight classes: welterweight, lightweight, and bantamweight. These matchups represent the culmination of an intense tournament structure, bringing together six elite athletes hailing from Angola, Liberia, Nigeria, and Senegal. As the fighters converge on Kigali, they carry the hopes of their home nations while stepping onto a major international platform designed to showcase the depth of combat sports talent originating from the African continent.
Headlining the blockbuster event in the Rwandan capital is a compelling welterweight championship clash between Angola’s Shido “Machine” Boris Esperança and the undefeated Nigerian rising star David Samuel. Esperança enters the main event holding an impressive professional record of 13 wins and just 2 losses, having punched his ticket to the championship final with a dominant first-round stoppage in the semifinal round. Known for his relentless pressure and finishing ability inside the cage, the Angolan standout is aiming to cement his legacy by claiming the PFL Africa welterweight crown.
Standing across the cage from him will be David Samuel, who boasts a flawless 7-0 professional record. Unlike his opponent’s quick finish in the previous round, Samuel had to dig deep and go the full distance in his semifinal bout, demonstrating the tactical discipline, conditioning, and mental fortitude required to preserve his undefeated streak under tournament pressure.
Both fighters have expressed their immense dedication as the fight date approaches. Speaking on the magnitude of the upcoming event, Esperança emphasized the collaborative effort behind his career thus far and the historic nature of the card.
“My team, my family, and I have been working a lot to make my dream come true,” Esperança said. “On Dec. 12, our African fans should expect one of the greatest nights ever in Africa.”
Samuel, meanwhile, remains entirely focused on protecting his spotless record and securing the championship belt in Kigali. Fully aware of the challenge posed by his Angolan opponent, the Nigerian contender enters the final with a singular, unyielding objective.
“On Dec. 12, I will step into the cage not just as a finalist, but as a man determined to finish what he started and become a champion,” Samuel said.
The co-main event of the evening features an explosive lightweight tournament final that pits Nigeria’s Patrick “Star Boi” Ocheme against Senegal’s Demba “Black Tiger” Seck. Ocheme brings a strong 10-1 professional record into the championship bout, having earned his place in the finals courtesy of a devastating first-round body-kick knockout. Notably, that victory marked Ocheme’s second consecutive opening-round finish in the tournament, establishing him as a dangerous and efficient finisher who wastes little time finding his range and exploiting his opponents’ vulnerabilities.
However, Seck enters the matchup with an 11-3 professional record and absolute confidence in his diverse skill set. The Senegalese contender believes that his well-rounded approach to mixed martial arts will ultimately neutralize Ocheme’s striking momentum and pave the way to victory.
“I respect his skills, but I truly believe I’m the most complete, technical, strongest, and most experienced fighter in this division,” Seck said.
The championship tripleheader will also feature a pivotal bantamweight final between Liberia’s Dwight Joseph and Nigeria’s Raphael Uchegbu. Joseph carries a wealth of experience into the contest with a 17-3 professional record, having secured his spot in the finals via a hard-fought split decision in the tournament’s previous round. For Joseph, this championship opportunity represents a moment of redemption and closure, having previously fallen just short of capturing glory in an earlier PFL Africa tournament. Determined not to let history repeat itself, the Liberian veteran is laser-focused on sealing his championship pursuit in Rwanda.
“I’m writing a different story this time in Kigali,” Joseph said. “I’m getting my hand raised, leaving with that belt, and taking it back to Liberia.”
Opposite Joseph will be Raphael Uchegbu of Nigeria, who enters the final holding an 11-2 professional record. A former Full Contact Contender champion, Uchegbu brings proven championship-level experience and high-level skill into the biggest fight of his career. Beyond personal glory, Uchegbu views the bout as an opportunity to inspire the next generation of athletes across the African continent and add another prestigious title to Nigeria’s growing combat sports resume.
“Winning in the final will change my life,” Uchegbu said. “I look forward to bringing the belt back to the motherland and showing the next generation of African fighters what is possible.”
The broader significance of the event extends far beyond individual accolades. Elias Schulze, General Manager of PFL Africa, highlighted the promotion’s core mission to provide the continent’s premier martial arts talent with a sustainable, world-class platform to display their abilities to a global audience.
“Together with our Rwandan partners, we’re giving African talent a world stage and the next generation something to fight for,” Schulze said.
The strategic partnership with local entities in Rwanda underscores the PFL’s commitment to fostering the growth of mixed martial arts within the region, turning Kigali into a temporary epicenter for international combat sports.
To ensure maximum visibility for the historic card, PFL Rwanda has secured extensive broadcasting partnerships across the continent and internationally. Fans residing in Africa will be able to tune into the live event through SuperSport, which will provide comprehensive coverage in English, as well as Canal+, offering French-language broadcasts. Additionally, free-to-air coverage will be made accessible to viewers via SportyTV, allowing a broad and diverse audience to witness the crowning of the inaugural PFL Africa champions.
Tickets for the live event at the BK Arena are currently available for purchase through the official PFL Rwanda ticket page. As the calendar counts down to Saturday, December 12, anticipation continues to build across the continent for what promises to be a landmark evening of elite athletic competition in Kigali.
