Alistair Overeem Eyes Boxing Debut Against Rico Verhoeven on Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua Undercard

Combat sports veteran Alistair Overeem has set his sights on a major transition into professional boxing, targeting a high-profile showdown against longtime kickboxing rival Rico Verhoeven. The former MMA champion and striking standout has publicly expressed his desire to feature on the upcoming blockbuster card headlined by Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, proposing a clash that has captivated combat sports fans worldwide.

Overeem took to social media to share his interest in the matchup, following up with a direct callout aimed at Verhoeven via his Instagram stories. With tensions and competitive history simmering between the two heavyweights for years, Overeem delivered a blunt message to his prospective opponent, writing, "Stop hiding. Let’s make history."

The targeted event is slated to take place at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, and is set to air live to a global audience on Netflix, making it one of the most anticipated boxing spectacles of the sports calendar. Securing a spot on such a monumental card would provide both heavyweights with a massive platform to showcase their skills in the squared circle.

For Verhoeven, a transition back to boxing comes on the heels of a high-profile debut earlier this year. In May, the dominant kickboxing champion participated in a major boxing show in Egypt, where he faced heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Despite putting up a valiant effort, Verhoeven suffered a controversial 11th-round stoppage defeat in what was widely praised as a competitive and gritty performance against one of the greatest technical boxers of the modern era.

Prior to his venture into professional boxing, Verhoeven enjoyed an illustrious and remarkably dominant run in kickboxing, remaining undefeated for over a decade while reigning supreme as the GLORY heavyweight champion. His paths nearly crossed with Overeem several years ago. The two heavyweights were originally scheduled to clash inside the kickboxing ring in 2021, but the bout was ultimately scrapped when Overeem was forced to withdraw from the contest due to an injury.

Overeem eventually returned to kickboxing action a year later, securing a hard-fought decision victory over kickboxing legend Badr Hari. However, that win was later overturned to a no-contest after Overeem was hit with a one-year suspension following a doping violation.

Overeem’s storied combat sports career spans multiple decades and encompasses elite-level success across mixed martial arts and kickboxing. During his legendary run in the UFC between 2018 and 2021, the Dutch powerhouse established himself as a perennial heavyweight contender, winning four of his last six bouts inside the Octagon, all by way of knockout. Among those victories was a devastating first-round stoppage over rising contender Sergei Pavlovich, showcasing the lethal striking prowess that has defined his career.

A pioneer of the heavyweight division, Overeem’s extensive UFC resume also features marquee victories over a veritable who’s who of combat sports royalty. Throughout his time competing at the highest levels of MMA, he secured dominant wins over former and future world champions including Fabricio Werdum, Frank Mir, MMA icon Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos, and Andrei Arlovski, in addition to capturing the Strikeforce heavyweight title earlier in his career.

As Overeem plots his next chapter and pushes to secure the matchup with Verhoeven in Cardiff, the combat sports community waits to see if the long-awaited collision between the two heavyweight titans will finally materialize under the bright lights of a Netflix-broadcast stadium show.
