Oleksandr Usyk Updates Prediction for Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua After ‘AJ’ Reunited with Ben Davison

Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua have forged a remarkably close relationship over the last twelve months, bonding over mutual respect and high-level competition at the elite level of the heavyweight division. However, following a significant shift in ‘AJ’s training setup—specifically his decision to part ways with members of Team Usyk and return to his former trainer Ben Davison—the unified heavyweight kingpin has officially updated his forecast for Joshua’s upcoming domestic blockbuster against arch-rival Tyson Fury.

The heavyweight landscape has experienced a series of dramatic shifts since Joshua’s unsuccessful challenge for Daniel Dubois’s IBF world heavyweight title back in 2024. In the aftermath of that punishing defeat, Joshua made an intriguing and unexpected strategic move, parting ways with Ben Davison and opting to partner with the masterminds behind his former conqueror, Usyk. Under this new alliance, Iegor Golub stepped in as Joshua’s lead cornerman, instilling a fresh tactical approach and guiding the British star through a transitional phase in his storied career.

This partnership bore immediate fruit in the win column. Since aligning with elements of Team Usyk, Joshua has stepped through the ropes twice, securing devastating knockout victories on both occasions. First came a high-profile, unorthodox stoppage of social media megastar-turned-boxer Jake Paul last December. That was followed in July by a more traditional return to the heavyweight division’s upper echelons—though it arrived via an uneasy, action-packed two-round shootout with Albania’s heavy-handed Kristian Prenga. These victories seemingly re-established Joshua as a formidable force, prompting optimistic projections about his championship future.

Earlier this year, when initially quizzed on his thoughts regarding a long-awaited, mooted matchup between Joshua and lineal heavyweight great Tyson Fury, Usyk was unequivocal in his support. Looking at Joshua’s trajectory under the guidance of his training setup at the time, the Ukrainian pound-for-pound star predicted that ‘AJ’ would ultimately come out on top in a clash with Fury, paving the way for him to reclaim the pinnacle of the sport and go on to become the undisputed heavyweight world champion. At that moment, the tactical synergy between Joshua and the Ukrainian camp seemingly gave the Briton the exact edge needed to solve the stylistic puzzles presented by someone as unorthodox and elusive as Fury.

However, the fluid nature of elite boxing has once again altered the equation. Joshua recently made the definitive decision to walk away from that training arrangement and return to the familiar confines of Ben Davison’s gym. This reunion with Davison has immediately shifted the professional consensus, and Usyk’s expert opinion has evolved in tandem with it. Speaking candidly in an interview with DAZN Boxing, the undisputed maestro admitted that he no longer views the prospective showdown as heavily tilted in Joshua’s favor, instead categorizing the historic British collision as a dead-even 50/50 affair.

Elaborating on his refreshed perspective to DAZN Boxing, Usyk emphasized the magnitude of the contest and the immense cultural weight it carries for the sport both domestically in the United Kingdom and across the global boxing landscape.

"It is a good fight, it is a 50/50," Usyk told DAZN Boxing. "A lot of fans have waited for the fight for 10 years because it is two big stars in the UK and a lot of fans around the world want this fight, me [I] too want this fight! I want to watch this fight because it’s like a choice of who is the only king of the UK."

The anticipation surrounding this collision of British heavyweight titans has been a decade in the making, with promotional hurdles, fluctuating rankings, and promotional rivalries repeatedly derailing attempts to make the fight during the primes of both men. Now, the landscape has finally cleared enough to bring the two giants together under the brightest possible lights.

The high-stakes encounter between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is officially scheduled to take place on Friday, December 11, at the iconic Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Beyond the deep-seated personal rivalry and the mythical crown of British heavyweight supremacy that Usyk referenced, the bout carries profound championship implications. According to promotional announcements, the victor of this monumental December showdown will reportedly walk away as the new WBA (Super) heavyweight champion of the world, thrusting the winner right back into the absolute center of the championship picture as the division barrels toward its next era.
