Professional Boxer Edgar Berlanga Arrested in Florida on Aggravated Battery Charges Involving Mother of His Child

Professional boxer Edgar Berlanga was arrested earlier this week in Polk County, Florida, following a heated physical altercation with the mother of his child, according to court documents obtained by media outlets. The undefeated-turned-contending fighter, who is signed to Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing, now faces serious legal trouble stemming from the domestic incident, which allegedly involved both physical violence and a firearm.

According to the official police report and court records, Berlanga was booked on Monday on one charge of misdemeanor battery and one felony charge of aggravated battery. The allegations against the rising sports star paint a troubling picture of a dispute that escalated rapidly inside a moving vehicle after the couple left a local gun range on October 18.

The alleged victim, who shares a son with the professional athlete, told law enforcement authorities that she and Berlanga became embroiled in an increasingly heated argument while he was driving. What began as a verbal altercation inside the car quickly turned physical, according to her statements to police. The woman claimed that Berlanga began repeatedly slapping her while continuing to operate the vehicle.

As the argument intensified, the situation reportedly became much more dangerous. The boxer is accused of reaching into the vehicle’s cupholder to retrieve a pistol. According to the court documents, Berlanga then struck the mother of his child on the forehead using the magazine well of the firearm.

Fearing for her safety, the woman attempted to escape from the moving vehicle. She claimed that she tried to flee the car, only for Berlanga to grab her arm and physically pull her back inside. Despite his attempts to detain her within the vehicle, she eventually managed to break away, exit the car, and seek emergency assistance at a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store.

Responding law enforcement officers met with the victim and subsequently documented physical evidence that corroborated her account of the harrowing incident. Police officers reported observing visible swelling and bruising on her face. Furthermore, officers noted that her shirt was ripped, and she displayed bruising on her inner arm that aligned precisely with her statements regarding Berlanga grabbing her forcibly during the struggle.

During questioning, officers asked the woman whether the firearm used in the assault was a real weapon. She confirmed that it was authentic, adding that she had personally witnessed Berlanga fire the gun multiple times at the shooting range approximately 20 minutes prior to the physical altercation inside the vehicle.

Despite the severity of the allegations, the police report noted that the woman initially expressed uncertainty regarding whether she wished to formally press charges against the professional fighter. Nevertheless, because law enforcement officers classified the event as a domestic violence case, the decision to proceed with an arrest was taken out of her hands.

Following his booking into custody in Polk County, Florida, Berlanga made his initial appearance before a judge on Tuesday. During the court hearing, a bond was officially set at $16,000, per local court records. The legal proceedings mark a significant and sudden detour for an athlete who has spent recent years building a prominent profile in the grueling world of professional combat sports.

Berlanga has long been regarded as a major name and a top-tier rising talent in the super middleweight division. Boasting an impressive professional boxing record of 24 wins and 2 losses, with 19 of those victories coming by way of knockout, he has captured the attention of fight fans around the globe. His explosive punching power and charismatic persona had established him as one of the sport’s most marketable young contenders.

His career reached a major milestone in September 2024, when he stepped into the ring to challenge undisputed boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez. In that high-profile bout, Berlanga fought valiantly for the prestigious WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight world titles. Although he ultimately suffered a defeat via unanimous decision, the showdown cemented his status as a legitimate main-event fighter capable of drawing massive audiences.

More recently, Berlanga continued to headline major fight cards, demonstrating his enduring drawing power. Earlier this year, he took center stage at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City. In front of a raucous crowd of boxing enthusiasts, he delivered a stellar performance, securing a dominant seventh-round knockout victory over Steven Butler.

That triumphant night in New York felt like another step forward in a promising athletic career, making this week’s sudden arrest in Florida a jarring development for both his professional promotional team and his supporters. As the legal process unfolds in Polk County, the future trajectory of Berlanga’s career in the boxing ring now hangs in the balance, overshadowed by the serious criminal charges he faces stemming from the October 18 incident.
