Petr Yan Defeats Merab Dvalishvili by Unanimous Decision to Retain UFC Bantamweight Championship at UFC 333

Merab Dvalishvili brought his trademark, seemingly endless supply of takedown attempts to the Octagon at UFC 333 on Saturday night, overwhelming opponents in the manner that has long defined his career. Unfortunately for the challenger from Georgia, Petr Yan brought something he simply couldn’t wrestle his way out of: five rounds of calculated, punishing mixed martial arts mastery.

Yan successfully defended his UFC bantamweight championship with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Dvalishvili, surviving the challenger’s furious early wrestling pressure before taking total control down the stretch. While Dvalishvili piled up takedowns through sheer volume and persistence, keeping Yan grounded proved to be an entirely different nightmare. As the championship rounds approached and the bout wore on, Yan’s damaging body kicks, sharp and calculated counters, and relentless forward pressure began to drain even Dvalishvili’s legendary, seemingly limitless gas tank.

By the later stages of the fight, Yan was landing the cleaner, more impactful shots while Dvalishvili was visibly running out of tactical answers. The challenger brought the cardio and the volume, but the champion brought the damage, ensuring that the coveted bantamweight belt was not going anywhere.

Round 1

Dvalishvili got things started immediately in the opening frame with a sharp leg kick while Yan followed him methodically around the cage, keeping his left hand extended to measure distance. Dvalishvili rushed forward suddenly, landing a couple of quick strikes upstairs before changing levels and shooting aggressively for a single-leg takedown. Yan, however, was fully prepared for the attempt, quickly stuffing the shot and securing his balance to get himself out of immediate danger.

Using a precise side kick, Yan pushed Dvalishvili backward against the fence, but the Georgian challenger was not about to stay pinned against the cage. Dvalishvili fired back with a quick punch before deftly circling around and securing a tight body lock. Yan managed to break free from the grip through sheer strength and technical awareness, forcing Dvalishvili to go back to work on the feet.

Dvalishvili continued to attack the legs and body with a steady stream of kicks while actively looking for any opening to drag the fight back to the canvas. He shot for another single-leg takedown, but Yan’s elite takedown defense was already presenting him with all kinds of tactical problems.

With his early takedown attempts going largely nowhere, Dvalishvili found himself forced to stand and trade strikes with a world-class striker. That was not exactly the game plan the challenger had mapped out for the opening stanza.

Yan remained remarkably patient, waiting deliberately for his openings rather than throwing punches out of frustration or recklessness. He eventually backed Dvalishvili against the fence once more, though he could not land anything significant before the athletic Georgian managed to escape the position.

Yan’s takedown defense remained on another level in the early going, forcing Dvalishvili to abandon his shots much quicker than he usually does. Dvalishvili kept searching for openings, but the champion was making him work intensely for every single inch of ground.

Yan eventually cracked Dvalishvili flush with a beautiful straight left hand that immediately brought the live crowd to life. Dvalishvili answered that momentary setback by shooting instantly for another takedown, finally managing to put Yan down on the canvas.

Unfortunately for the challenger, getting the champion down was only half the battle. Yan quickly scrambled back to his feet with impressive agility, reversed the positional advantage, and pushed Dvalishvili against the fence before cleanly breaking away.

Dvalishvili was not about to abandon his wrestling base, however. He charged forward once again with a wild single-leg attempt and managed to drag Yan back down to the canvas. Keeping the champion grounded, nonetheless, was proving to be a persistent nightmare.

Dvalishvili managed to land a couple of short shots to the head before the horn sounded to bring the competitive opening round to a close.

Round 2

Yan came out pressing forward once again at the start of the second frame, but this time he was far less interested in waiting around to let his offense develop. He began putting together sharp one-two combinations, forcing Dvalishvili to answer back with heavy punches of his own.

Yan eventually loaded up on a massive right hand, looking to send Dvalishvili’s head into the cheap seats. Unfortunately for the champion, Dvalishvili saw the opening and immediately dropped down to put Yan on the canvas once again.

Yan scrambled back to his feet and broke free, but Dvalishvili refused to give him any breathing room. The Georgian shot in again and dragged Yan right back down to the mat. This time, however, Yan cleverly reversed the position, taking Dvalishvili’s back while still standing and landing effective punches in the process.

The two fighters eventually separated, and Yan went right back to cracking Dvalishvili with punches upstairs. Dvalishvili answered by grabbing hold of the champion and looking for yet another takedown.

At this point in the contest, Dvalishvili’s tactical game plan was transparent: takedowns, more takedowns, and when those weren’t quite enough, how about another takedown? Dvalishvili managed to put Yan on the canvas again, but the resilient champion quickly worked his way back to his feet. Dvalishvili greeted him with a sharp leg kick before continuing his relentless forward pressure.

The Georgian’s pace was permanently stuck in high gear, and apparently, nobody had bothered to install any brakes. Dvalishvili continued trading strikes with Yan while constantly looking for opportunities to change levels and shoot. Yan connected cleanly with a left hand, but Dvalishvili barely seemed to notice the impact. Instead, he simply charged forward and scored yet another takedown.

Just like the previous attempts, though, Yan wasted little time getting himself right back to his feet. Dvalishvili was undeniably piling up takedowns on the scorecards, but he wasn’t doing much significant damage once he got Yan to the canvas.

That reality raised a fascinating question as the bout progressed. How much weight were the judges going to award Dvalishvili’s takedown statistics when the champion kept getting right back up without absorbing major punishment? Dvalishvili was certainly winning the wrestling numbers game, but whether that translated to winning the individual rounds remained an open conversation.

Round 3

Yan came out pressing the action once again in the third frame, though actually letting his hands go with absolute freedom was proving to be a challenge. With Dvalishvili constantly threatening with sudden takedowns, the champion appeared slightly hesitant to fully open up and risk getting dragged back to the mat.

Dvalishvili eventually drove Yan against the fence, and the two competitors returned to their familiar activity: the classic fence dance. Yan managed to break free from the clinch, but not before eating a hard knee to the body for his trouble.

The champion continued to struggle to put together any truly meaningful offensive output, which allowed Dvalishvili to find moments of success with his own striking. Every time Yan looked to get something going offensively, Dvalishvili was right there threatening another takedown. Dvalishvili would shoot, Yan would defend, and the cycle would repeat.

Yan’s takedown defense remained deeply impressive, but it was coming somewhat at the expense of his striking offense. He simply wasn’t finding the exact same opportunities to punish Dvalishvili that he had utilized in their previous encounters.

Yan eventually started finding a home for some heavy, damaging shots, but Dvalishvili apparently hadn’t discovered the biological concept of slowing down. The Georgian continued to press forward, throwing strikes and shooting for takedowns as if his gas tank carried an unlimited warranty.

Then, Yan finally connected with a nasty body kick that appeared to visibly hurt Dvalishvili, forcing the challenger to circle away in retreat. For a brief moment, it looked as though Yan had finally found the key to slow the relentless Georgian down.

Unfortunately for the champion, that moment did not last long. Dvalishvili recovered his composure, came right back into striking range, and started landing shots of his own. Even when Yan managed to hurt him, Dvalishvili refused to give the champion a single second to breathe.

Round 4

Dvalishvili wasted absolutely no time at the start of the fourth round, shooting immediately for another takedown, but Yan stuffed the attempt without much difficulty.

Yan started letting his hands go with authority, landing heavy shots that appeared to finally be taking a toll on Dvalishvili’s legendary gas tank. The Georgian was finally showing visible signs of slowing down, and his lateral movement was not nearly as sharp as it had been in the opening rounds.

Dvalishvili managed to land a clean head kick and a jab, but Yan was entirely uninterested in giving up any ground. The champion marched forward methodically, looking to make Dvalishvili pay dearly for every single exchange. Dvalishvili shot for another takedown, but Yan shut that door firmly as well.

At this juncture, Dvalishvili’s gas tank was starting to look like it needed a serious refuel. Sensing the shift in momentum, Yan smelled blood and began moving forward with bad intentions. He unloaded heavy punches upstairs while mixing in punishing blows to the body, forcing Dvalishvili to deal with an overwhelming level of sustained pressure.

For the first time in the entire fight, Yan’s offense was truly taking over the narrative. The champion was timing his counterstrikes beautifully, making Dvalishvili miss and forcing him to reset before managing any offense.

Yan eventually connected with a clean head kick, though Dvalishvili answered with a body kick of his own. Yan was not about to let that go unpunished, firing back with a massive right hand to continue the pressure on a visibly exhausted opponent.

Late in the round, Yan went right back to the body with another nasty kick, landing in the exact same spot where he had hurt Dvalishvili earlier, providing a painful reminder of the accumulated damage. Yan was finding his rhythm precisely when it mattered most, and Dvalishvili was discovering that even his ridiculous cardio had its limits.

Round 5

Yan came out for the final frame looking to put a definitive exclamation point on his performance, immediately letting his hands fly upstairs. Dvalishvili caught him with a clean right hand, but Yan answered instantly with a nasty left hook of his own.

Yan even decided to try his luck with a surprise takedown attempt of his own, though he quickly abandoned the effort before firing another kick upstairs. Meanwhile, Dvalishvili’s famous gas tank was finally running on fumes.

The Georgian continued to shoot for desperation takedowns, but the explosive speed that had made him so dangerous earlier in the night was largely gone. Yan kept attacking the body with kicks, while Dvalishvili was no longer reacting to them with his previous vigor.

The champion clearly had one primary target in mind: the body. Yan continued digging hard shots into Dvalishvili’s midsection, and the challenger was doing very little to evade them. Yan even mixed in a jumping knee that connected cleanly, though Dvalishvili managed to shake it off through sheer willpower.

Unfortunately for the challenger, Yan was not finished distributing punishment. The champion unloaded a punishing combination that appeared to drain even more energy out of the exhausted challenger. At this point, Yan was throwing everything in his arsenal: knees to the body, punches upstairs, kicks downstairs, and enough pressure to make any fighter question their career.

Dvalishvili was forced to dig deeper than ever to find whatever reserves remained in his tank. The core problem was that every time Yan turned up his offensive output, Dvalishvili seemed to have less and less to offer in return.

Yan found his rhythm at the exact right time, while Dvalishvili struggled simply to survive the final bell. With just ten seconds remaining, Dvalishvili summoned a final burst of energy and charged forward for one last desperate exchange. Yan greeted him with another solid shot to the body before the final horn brought the grueling contest to a close.

Dvalishvili brought his trademark relentless pace to the Octagon, but Petr Yan spent the championship rounds making him pay dearly for every second of it.

Petr Yan remains the UFC bantamweight champion, securing his ongoing reign over the division.

Official Result: Petr Yan def. Merab Dvalishvili via Unanimous Decision (48-47 x3)
