Mike Tyson Admits Regret Over Jake Paul Fight After Revealing Near-Death Medical Emergency

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has made the candid admission that he questioned his decision to step back into the professional boxing ring against Jake Paul, just six months after surviving a life-threatening medical emergency.

Tyson, who returned to professional boxing at the age of 58 in November 2024, offered little resistance against his much younger opponent. He ultimately suffered a unanimous decision loss over eight rounds, as the immense age gap and his long absence from the sport became painfully apparent to millions of viewers worldwide.

Reflecting on the aftermath of the high-profile bout during a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Tyson shared what went through his mind the morning after the fight, admitting that he immediately questioned the sanity of his comeback during a conversation with his wife, Kiki.

"I’ll tell you what I thought. I woke up the next morning, I was so sore, I said, ‘What the hell did I do that for?’" Tyson recalled. He continued, explaining, "That’s the first time I told my wife, ‘Hey, what the hell did I do that for? What am I out of my mind?’"

Tyson Was Widely Warned About the Dangers of Facing Paul

Ahead of the highly publicized event, combat sports analysts and publications, including World Boxing News, repeatedly questioned the wisdom of the comeback. Critics pointed out the immense risks of Tyson adding a seventh professional defeat to his legendary record against a crossover YouTuber turned boxer.

At 58 years old, Tyson could no longer physically reproduce the explosive speed and devastating knockout power that once defined his era as the most feared heavyweight on the planet. His final two professional appearances before facing Paul had ended in stoppage defeats to Danny Williams and Kevin McBride nearly two decades earlier, in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Despite this long hiatus from competitive boxing, Tyson accepted a bout against an opponent who was 31 years his junior.

Observers also highlighted historical precedents within the sport, noting the cautionary tale of former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. Holyfield had attempted a similar comeback at the age of 58 against Vitor Belfort in 2021, only to be decisively stopped in the opening round.

However, for Tyson, the warning signs and physical red flags extended far beyond the normal concerns associated with advanced age and prolonged inactivity.

In May 2024, several months before the initially scheduled date for the bout, Tyson suffered a severe stomach ulcer bleed while on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles. The medical emergency was so acute that it left him genuinely fearing for his life and forced a postponement of the entire event.

Speaking to New York Magazine prior to the rescheduled fight, Tyson recounted the terrifying details of the incident, explaining that he had suddenly passed out and subsequently began vomiting blood.

"When I came to, I was in the bathroom throwing up blood," he recalled.

Mike Tyson Almost Died, Now He Questions the Jake Paul Fight

With his wife in tears and medical professionals frantically assessing his unstable condition in the hospital, Tyson confronted the very real possibility that he might not survive the flight’s aftermath.

"I asked the doctor, ‘Am I going to die?’ He said, ‘We have options.’ Options? I couldn’t believe it," Tyson said.

Medical evaluations later revealed the true severity of the crisis. Tyson required approximately eight blood transfusions, lost 25 pounds over the course of eleven days, and was informed by doctors that he had lost half of the blood in his body. Reflecting on the ordeal, he admitted simply, "I almost died."

Despite the traumatic health scare, Tyson mounted a determined recovery, returned to rigorous training camps, and eventually received medical clearance to proceed with the bout against Paul.

Inquiries made to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation regarding his medical status established that Tyson’s professional boxing license had originally been granted in May and remained officially valid following his recovery from the ulcer bleed. Tela Mange, communications manager for the department, confirmed that athletic regulators maintained oversight of the situation, noting that they were prepared to request additional testing if deemed necessary for athlete safety.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and ask for any additional testing that we feel is appropriate," Mange stated.

Tyson Admits Ego Played a Significant Role

During his discussion with Piers Morgan, the conversation turned to the underlying motivations behind Tyson’s decision to press forward with the fight. While Morgan suggested that financial gain was the most obvious catalyst for accepting the massive payday associated with a Netflix-broadcasted event against Jake Paul, Tyson pushed back against the notion that he needed the money.

"I don’t know. We would have been fine without it. But we’re better now, but we’d have been fine without it," Tyson said, addressing his financial standing.

He then conceded that a different, more intangible force had driven his return to the squared circle.

"All that ego stuff. I don’t know why that stuff still hangs around," Tyson acknowledged.

Throughout the buildup to the fight, boxing experts had warned Tyson about the potential damage to his legacy and the physical consequences of stepping into the ring at his age. Combined with his near-death experience earlier in the year, there were multiple compelling reasons for the former champion to step away from the comeback entirely. Yet, driven by lingering pride and competitive drive, he chose to proceed with a lucrative venture that he now openly admits was not financially essential.

While Tyson has stopped short of explicitly stating that he regrets the entire endeavor, his frank admission that he questioned his decision the very next morning highlights the complex reality of a legendary athlete grappling with his limitations. After surviving a medical emergency that nearly cost him his life, Tyson returned to the professional stage, added a seventh loss to his storied career, and woke up asking himself why he had taken such an immense risk.
