Norwegian football club FK Bodø/Glimt is embarking on a comprehensive strategy to boost its commercial revenue and sporting competitiveness by investing heavily in advanced technology and innovation. The initiative brings together a newly developed unified data infrastructure and EDGE Case Ventures, the club’s dedicated tech partnership platform, creating a collaborative ecosystem designed to move beyond traditional sponsorship models.
Rather than simply purchasing off-the-shelf software, the club is opening its doors to startups and established technology companies, inviting them to develop, validate, and demonstrate their products within a live professional sports environment. In return, Bodø/Glimt gains direct access to cutting-edge technology, specialized expertise, and entirely new commercial revenue streams.
“Data and AI is the next frontier where we intend to apply it,” says Alma Antonia Botten, Technology & Innovation Lead at Bodø/Glimt and CEO of EDGE Case Ventures AS.
At the center of this ambitious strategy is a unified data lake currently being developed in close collaboration with international business consultancy BearingPoint. This central repository successfully bridges the gap between the club’s sporting operations and its commercial activities. Bodø/Glimt describes the data lake as the vital engine driving its broader technology strategy, while EDGE Case Ventures serves as the primary mechanism enabling external partners to plug directly into the club and its robust data infrastructure.
This forward-thinking approach directly reflects the club’s broader philosophy of competing effectively on the European stage without the massive financial resources typically available to the continent’s biggest traditional powerhouses. Bodø/Glimt refers to this guiding philosophy as “Vårres måte” (“Our Way”), which is fundamentally built around identifying unique opportunities, maintaining an uncompromising focus on performance, and continuously challenging established ways of working. The club now intends to apply that exact mindset to the fields of data analytics and artificial intelligence.
EDGE Case Ventures actively translates that philosophy into the commercial marketplace. Through the platform, technology partners have the unique opportunity to co-develop innovative solutions across a wide array of club operations, spanning sporting departments, stadium and venue management, commercial initiatives, fan engagement, media production, and general administration. Partners work directly with real users and navigate genuine operational challenges, ensuring that any software or hardware developed is rigorously tested in a demanding professional setting.
A prime practical example of how the EDGE platform operates can be seen in the club’s ongoing co-development work with startup Insitu.fit, alongside established collaborations with sports-focused investment firm APEX and its various portfolio companies. The partnership with Insitu.fit is designed to bring medical and physical performance data together into a single, cohesive environment.
The resulting technical solution seamlessly connects data from across the club’s existing systems, including daily training metrics, wearable device telemetry, physical sensors, laboratory test results, critical medical information, and contextual qualitative notes. By centralizing these inputs, the platform makes it significantly easier for staff to analyze complex information across multiple sources rather than examining data points in isolated silos.
By combining advanced machine learning algorithms with an embedded large language model and natural-language interaction capabilities, the platform supports diverse working styles across the entire sporting organization. Coaches, medical clinicians, and physical performance staff can independently explore data, build comprehensive analyses, and structure daily workflows in ways that accurately reflect their individual roles and professional processes, all while working securely from the exact same underlying pool of information.
However, this technological proposition is set to expand significantly in scale and importance with the development of Bodø/Glimt’s brand-new stadium, which is currently scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The stadium construction project has acted as one of the primary catalysts behind the club’s decision to build a proper, scalable data platform from the ground up, creating an exceptional opportunity to introduce innovative technology natively as the new venue takes shape.
The underlying commercial model championed by the club is also purposefully designed to extend far beyond conventional sports sponsorship arrangements. Depending on the specific nature of each partnership, EDGE can involve flexible revenue-sharing agreements, discounted access to proprietary technology, royalty frameworks, equity participation, and, in selected strategic cases, direct ownership stakes in the ventures themselves.
Participating technology companies also stand to gain invaluable commercial validation through a concrete reference case for their products. Bodø/Glimt offers its partners extensive opportunities centered around detailed case studies, co-branded marketing content, executive speaking engagements, and direct access to the club’s wider Nordic sports network.
Operating from a city of approximately 42,000 residents situated well above the Arctic Circle, Bodø/Glimt’s overall ambition remains remarkably bold: to leverage modern technology and sophisticated data practices not only to elevate sporting and operational performance on the pitch, but to generate entirely new commercial revenue streams and establish the club as a recognized reference point for sports technology across both the Nordic and broader European markets.
