ONE Fight Night 49 Preview: Lucas Gabriel Meets Undefeated Newcomer Magomed Magomedov in Bangkok Main Event

ONE Championship is set to close out another action-packed weekend at the iconic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, delivering a massive 9-fight card spanning mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and submission grappling.

ONE Fight Night 49: Gabriel vs. Magomedov is scheduled to take place on Friday, Nov. 6, broadcasting live in U.S. primetime. The high-stakes main event features Brazilian lightweight contender Lucas Gabriel stepping into the ring against undefeated promotional newcomer Magomed Magomedov.

Originally, Gabriel was booked to lock horns with former title challenger Alibeg Rasulov. However, an unfortunate injury forced Rasulov to withdraw from the card entirely. Seizing the opportunity on short notice, Magomedov stepped up to accept the matchup, putting his unblemished 15-0 professional record on the line as he makes his highly anticipated promotional debut under the ONE Championship banner.

The timing of this main event could not be more critical for the lightweight division. Earlier on the same day, Christian Lee is slated to defend the ONE lightweight MMA championship against elite grappler Tye Ruotolo at The Inner Circle 37. Consequently, the explosive winner of the Gabriel-Magomedov clash could very well emerge as the next rightful challenger to face the division’s reigning titleholder.

Gabriel’s Experience Meets Magomedov’s Perfect Record

Lucas Gabriel enters the contest boasting an impressive 11-1 record alongside one no-contest. The 26-year-old Brazilian powerhouse has remained thoroughly unbeaten across six appearances inside the ONE Championship ring, securing five vital victories while firmly cementing his status as one of the promotion’s premier lightweight contenders.

As a credentialed Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Gabriel expertly combines aggressive grappling sequences with heavy, concussive striking and relentless forward pressure. His notable ONE résumé features a slick submission victory over Gadzhimurad Amirzhanov, as well as hard-fought decision victories over tough competitors like Magomed Akaev and former lightweight titleholder Ok Rae Yoon. Furthermore, Gabriel hones his skills alongside former ONE bantamweight champion John Lineker, ensuring he remains supremely comfortable in fights predicated on high-paced pressure and punishing physical exchanges.

Magomedov, however, introduces an entirely different set of obstacles for the Brazilian veteran. Representing KHK Dagestan, the 31-year-old newcomer has impressively finished each of his last five professional opponents. His fighting style is built upon a foundation of suffocating wrestling, positional control, and a relentless, grinding pace specifically designed to gradually break the morale and physical resolve of his adversaries.

Making a promotional debut against a seasoned, elite contender is a tall order for any athlete. Accepting such an assignment on short notice in a grueling five-round main event makes Magomedov’s debut challenge exponentially more demanding.

Even so, the newcomer enters the arena with everything to gain. A statement victory over Gabriel would preserve his pristine undefeated record and instantly insert him into the upper echelon of the lightweight title picture. Meanwhile, Gabriel must quickly pivot to handle the tactical uncertainty that accompanies a late-notice opponent change. Instead of preparing for Rasulov, he must now decode an undefeated powerhouse with minimal promotional footage available and absolutely nothing to lose.

While both men possess the finishing capability to end the fight early, their most viable and explosive paths to victory run straight through the grappling exchanges. Gabriel will undoubtedly hunt for tactical submissions and damaging strikes during grappling transitions, whereas Magomedov will look to dictate the geography of the match, secure dominant control, and impose his suffocating pace from the opening bell.

Kongthoranee and Naito Run It Back Under Kickboxing Rules

The co-main event of the evening features a compelling flyweight kickboxing rematch between elite strikers Kongthoranee Sor Sommai and Taiki Naito.

The two skilled martial artists previously crossed paths under Muay Thai rules back in October 2023, with Kongthoranee walking away with a hard-earned unanimous decision victory. Now, three years later, a major shift in the rule set could drastically alter the dynamics of the matchup.

Kongthoranee has successfully transitioned into kickboxing competition, recently winning his promotional debut in the sport against Yuan Pengjie. The three-time Rajadamnern Stadium champion will attempt to replicate his previous success against Naito while simultaneously building a compelling case for a shot at the currently vacant ONE flyweight kickboxing championship.

Across the ring, Naito enters the bout riding the momentum of three consecutive victories. Nicknamed “The Silent Sniper,” the Japanese veteran notably handed Johan Estupinan his first professional loss, scored a devastating knockout win over Nakrob Fairtex, and subsequently defeated Hyu Iwata in kickboxing action.

Naito’s deep familiarity with the pure kickboxing rule set could prove to be the deciding factor. The elimination of elbows and the strict limitation of prolonged clinch exchanges should afford Naito more opportunities to control the distance, leverage his lateral movement, and utilize his exceptional speed.

A second victory over Naito would propel Kongthoranee further into the conversation for the flyweight kickboxing title. Conversely, a win for Naito would even their ongoing rivalry at one win apiece while marking the milestone of his 40th professional victory.

Felipe Lobo Faces Replacement Opponent Nontachai

In the bantamweight division, former ONE Muay Thai title challenger Felipe Lobo finds himself with a new opponent after Katsuki Kitano was forced to withdraw from the card due to injury. Lobo will now face off against Nontachai Jitmuangnon in a high-stakes encounter.

Lobo is no stranger to the deepest waters of the weight class, having previously shared the ring with some of the division’s most dangerous strikers, including Jonathan Haggerty, Saemapetch Fairtex, and Dmitrii Kovtun. The Brazilian’s immense punching power makes him a constant threat when competing in four-ounce gloves, though he enters this weekend’s affair looking to bounce back and halt a difficult skid in momentum.

Nontachai similarly finds himself in desperate need of a win following a setback against Kiamran Nabati. With both fighters eager to regain their footing and climb the divisional ladder, neither man can afford to cede ground in the fiercely competitive bantamweight ranks.

Undefeated Records Collide

The undercard is packed with rising talent, featuring several matchups where undefeated records are guaranteed to collide, ensuring that at least two fighters will suffer the first defeats of their professional careers.

In strawweight MMA action, South Korea’s Lee Seung Cheol, who holds a 6-0 record under the ONE banner, squares off against undefeated Indian prospect Nazareth Lalthazuala. Lalthazuala punched his ticket to the global stage by securing a lucrative six-figure ONE contract courtesy of a blistering first-round stoppage at ONE Friday Fights 157.

Another guaranteed zero-loss elimination takes place in the bantamweight MMA division, where Kalandar Tabarov meets Ilmadi Israilov. Tabarov steps into the ring with an unblemished 5-0 record complemented by an 80 percent finishing rate, while Israilov boasts an unblemished 9-0 mark featuring six victories by way of submission.

In women’s atomweight competition, undefeated Polish prospect Magdalena Czaban is set to test her skills against Vick Souza. Czaban successfully navigated her promotional debut by defeating Natalie Salcedo, while Souza brings four promotional victories into the matchup, including a recent win over veteran Ayaka Miura.

Heavyweight Grapplers Make Their ONE Debuts

The card also delivers a thrilling openweight submission grappling showcase as ADCC world champion Victor Hugo locks horns with IBJJF No-Gi world champion Devhonte Johnson in their respective promotional debuts.

Both athletes bring world-class grappling credentials and imposing physical size to the contest. Hugo is widely recognized for combining relentless submission pressure with a uniquely dangerous guard game, whereas Johnson utilizes elite wrestling pedigree and suffocating top control to transform matches into grueling physical tests.

Additional action on the card features featherweight kickboxers Zhou Jiaqiang and Mamuka Usubyan going head-to-head, alongside a lightweight kickboxing clash between Bogdan Shumarov and Gasham Mammadov.

ONE Fight Night 49 gets underway on Friday, Nov. 6, starting at 9 p.m. ET, and will broadcast live to audiences in the United States and Canada via Prime Video.
