Unified World Champion Tells Vasiliy Lomachenko to Take a Tune-Up Fight Before Targeting Super-Featherweight Crown

Vasiliy Lomachenko appears poised to make his much-anticipated return to the boxing ring with his sights firmly set on capturing the undisputed super-featherweight championship. However, one of the division’s most dominant unified world champions has already issued a stern warning, advising the Ukrainian veteran to take a preliminary warm-up bout first so that there will be no room for excuses when they inevitably meet in the squared circle.

Throughout his illustrious career, the fighter affectionately known as "Loma" has carved out a legacy as one of the finest technicians in the history of the sport. Having already captured world titles across three different weight divisions with breathtaking speed, exceptional footwork, and unparalleled ring IQ, Lomachenko was always fiercely vocal about his ultimate ambition to become an undisputed world champion. That long-held dream suffered a heartbreaking blow in 2023 when he dropped a closely contested and highly controversial unanimous decision to undisputed lightweight king Devin Haney in Las Vegas, a verdict that left fans, pundits, and fighters debating the outcome long after the final bell.

Refusing to let that setback define the twilight of his career, Lomachenko bounced back with trademark resilience the following year. He captured the IBF lightweight world title with a masterclass performance, ultimately stopping former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. in Australia to reestablish himself at the absolute pinnacle of the 135-pound weight class. Yet, just as his future seemed wide open, the boxing world was caught off guard when retirement rumors surfaced, followed by an announcement that Lomachenko would step away from the sport in 2025.

That retirement, as it turns out, was short-lived. In a move that has electrified the boxing landscape, Lomachenko recently performed a sudden U-turn, announcing his comeback and setting off immediate speculation regarding his next destination. Since the announcement, it has become abundantly clear that the master technician is eyeing a historic run at the 130-pound super-featherweight division, looking to secure all four major world titles before finally hanging up his gloves for good.

The super-featherweight division has evolved dramatically in his absence. Three of the prestigious world titles are now consolidated in the hands of Texas standout O’Shaquie Foster, who delivered a career-defining performance by defeating Emanuel Navarrete to unify the belts. Meanwhile, the remaining major world championship is proudly held by Belfast’s heavy-handed puncher Anthony Cacace.

While it remains to be seen precisely which champion Lomachenko will target first upon his return, Foster has made it abundantly clear that he wants the 38-year-old veteran to shake off the ring rust against an alternative opponent before stepping into the ring with him. Speaking candidly in an interview with Fight Hub TV, Foster explained his reasoning for demanding a tune-up fight for the former pound-for-pound star.

Foster stated that he wants Loma to get a tune-up fight or something because, when he beats him, he wants no excuses from anyone. Pointing out the obvious reality of the Ukrainian’s recent time away from the sport, Foster emphasized that Lomachenko has been retired and needs a proper test beforehand. Foster added that Lomachenko can think whatever he wants, but he needs him to get that tune-up fight because he does not want any excuses when he beats him, reiterating that he wants none whatsoever.

Lomachenko’s planned return to the ring, which was originally anticipated for November, appears to have experienced a slight delay and has now been pushed back to February. When he does make his comeback, he could potentially collide with the winner of Anthony Cacace’s high-stakes WBA title defense against challenger Nick Ball, a compelling clash scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 19.

Despite the allure of an immediate world title opportunity against the winner of Cacace versus Ball, current boxing politics and promotional landscapes suggest a different initial roadblock. It is understood that dangerous Filipino contender Charly Suarez is currently the frontrunner to serve as Lomachenko’s comeback opponent. Suarez holds a strong position as the WBO mandatory challenger, making him a logical and high-ranking hurdle for the returning veteran as he tests the waters in a new weight division.

Because of these mandatory obligations and the intricate web of sanctioning bodies, boxing fans could instead witness an alternative scenario unfold at the top of the division. There is a strong possibility that O’Shaquie Foster could face off against the winner of the Cacace and Ball showdown in a massive undisputed title unification bout. Should that path materialize, Lomachenko could find himself positioned strategically to challenge the winner of that undisputed war, setting the stage for one of the most high-profile championship encounters of the year as the legendary southpaw attempts to secure his final piece of boxing immortality.
