Former Professional Mixed Martial Artist and Academy Owner Brian DeMuro Fatally Shot Following Altercation With Brother in North Carolina

The tight-knit community of martial arts practitioners in North Carolina and the broader mixed martial arts world are mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Brian DeMuro, a 47-year-old former professional MMA fighter who also served as the owner and head instructor of Gracie Barra Knightdale. DeMuro was shot and killed on Sunday following an escalating dispute with his brother, an incident that is currently under active investigation by local law enforcement and set for review by the local district attorney’s office.

According to initial reports and statements released by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and emergency first responders were dispatched to a residential property following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders immediately initiated lifesaving medical measures on DeMuro, who had sustained critical injuries. Despite their efforts, DeMuro succumbed to his wounds at the scene.

Investigators piecing together the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy have disclosed that the fatal encounter unfolded during a family visit. Authorities stated that DeMuro’s brother had traveled to the residence to visit their 77-year-old mother. At the time of the visit, the elderly woman was staying at the home alongside Brian DeMuro. What was presumably intended to be a routine family gathering quickly deteriorated, however, turning tense and ultimately violent.

According to the findings released by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, a physical altercation broke out between the two brothers inside the residence. As the physical struggle intensified, the situation escalated rapidly. Investigators stated that during the course of the altercation, Brian DeMuro reportedly attempted to produce a firearm. In response to that action, authorities report that his brother produced his own weapon and discharged it, fatally striking DeMuro.

Following the shooting, the surviving brother remained at the scene rather than fleeing, and law enforcement officials confirmed that he has been fully cooperative with investigators as they work to establish a comprehensive timeline and understanding of the incident. As the investigation continues to unfold, no criminal charges have been filed against the surviving brother at this time.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the inquiry is thorough and ongoing. Officials noted that once the investigative process has reached its conclusion, all gathered evidence, reports, and findings will be formally forwarded to the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors within the District Attorney’s Office will then independently review the case file to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted under North Carolina law, a standard procedure in fatal shooting investigations where self-defense claims or mutual altercations are evaluated.

Beyond the immediate tragic circumstances of his death, DeMuro was well-known within the regional martial arts community as a dedicated instructor, gym owner, and competitor. As the owner and head instructor at Gracie Barra Knightdale, he played a central role in teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts fundamentals to students of various ages and skill levels, building a reputation as a mentor and leader within the local athletic community.

Before transitioning into full-time coaching and academy management, DeMuro competed inside the professional mixed martial arts cage. His professional career saw him test his skills against formidable opponents on the regional circuit, with his most recent professional MMA bout taking place in May 2021. Over the course of his professional career, DeMuro compiled an overall professional record of four wins and eight losses, reflecting a journey defined by perseverance, resilience, and a deep passion for combat sports that he would later pass on to the next generation of students who trained under his guidance at his North Carolina academy.

Local authorities have urged anyone with additional information relevant to the case to contact the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation moves toward its final review by the District Attorney’s Office.
