Heavyweight contender Daniel Dubois could make a spectacular return to the ring as early as January, lining up a potential defense of his WBO world title against a former world champion with whom he shares a compelling history of unfinished business.
The 29-year-old British powerhouse cemented his elite status in the division when he became a two-time world heavyweight champion back in May. That dramatic night saw "Dynamite" Dubois forced to dig deep, surviving two early knockdowns before launching a fierce comeback that culminated in an 11th-round stoppage of Fabio Wardley to claim the crown.
If boxing fans expected a lengthy recovery or a cautious approach following such a taxing encounter, Dubois proved them wrong by engaging in an immediate rematch earlier this month. Things were far more straightforward the second time around. Dubois wasted no time establishing his dominance, flooring his challenger within the first 17 seconds of the opening bell before ultimately securing a decisive second-round finish to emphatically close the chapter on his rivalry with Wardley.
Yet, in the immediate aftermath of that victory, standing triumphantly inside the squared circle, Dubois quickly turned his attention to the horizon. He openly expressed his desire for a massive unification match against Filip Hrgovic. The Croatian contender had staked his own claim to the heavyweight summit by delivering a stunning ninth-round stoppage victory over Moses Itauma back in August, capturing the prestigious IBF title in the process.
Despite the mutual appeal of a Dubois-Hrgovic unification clash, boxing politics and mandatory obligations mean that particular matchup is unlikely to materialize anytime soon. Hrgovic is currently scheduled to face his mandatory challenger, Frank Sanchez, in the new year. With the Croatian tied up in his mandatory defense, Dubois and his promotional team have had to pivot toward alternative options to keep the champion active and the division moving forward.
More likely on the immediate horizon is a WBO title defense against Joseph Parker. The paths of Dubois and the New Zealander have famously crossed before. The two heavyweights were originally scheduled to square off in February 2025 with the IBF strap hanging in the balance. However, fight week drama disrupted those plans when Dubois was forced to pull out of the bout due to a sudden illness. Following that cancellation, Dubois went on to face Oleksandr Usyk the following July, suffering a fifth-round stoppage defeat that temporarily halted his momentum before his triumphant resurgence in May.
According to reports from Ring Magazine, the postponed showdown between Dubois and Parker is now being seriously revisited as a lucrative option for a January 30 fight date. Organizers are currently eyeing high-profile venues for the event, with London’s iconic O2 Arena and Manchester’s state-of-the-art Co-op Live emerging as the leading contenders to host the blockbuster heavyweight clash.
For Parker, a January return would mark his first appearance in the ring since his own bruising encounter with Fabio Wardley in October 2025. That night ended in disappointment for the New Zealander as he suffered an 11th-round stoppage defeat. Complications followed outside the ring when Parker subsequently tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a prominent metabolite of cocaine, which led to a provisional suspension issued by UK Anti-Doping.
The situation surrounding the veteran contender was later resolved this past August when UK Anti-Doping lifted his provisional suspension. Parker and his legal team successfully argued that the positive test was the result of inadvertent environmental exposure to cocaine used by his nutritionist at the time, clearing the 34-year-old to resume his professional career.
Now, with both fighters eager to re-establish their dominance at the pinnacle of the heavyweight division, the stage appears set for a high-stakes showdown in the opening weeks of the new year, offering Dubois a chance to successfully defend his championship while granting Parker the opportunity to settle a score that has been years in the making.
