UFC Veteran Referee Herb Dean Faces Growing Fan Backlash as Alex Pereira Opens Up on Controversial Bout and Future Demands

Veteran UFC referee Herb Dean has found himself at the center of a mounting storm of controversy, regularly drawing a heavy wave of boos from live crowds at recent mixed martial arts events. Whenever the respected official’s face appears on arena big screens or is highlighted in broadcast graphics, the negative reactions from spectators have become increasingly difficult to ignore. This hostile reception underscores a turbulent period for one of the most recognizable figures in the history of the sport, as a combination of high-profile disputed calls and public criticism from major athletes continues to shadow his officiating assignments.

The current wave of animosity appears to have intensified significantly following public comments made by former UFC champion Alex Pereira. The Brazilian star openly criticized Dean in the aftermath of his hard-fought interim heavyweight title clash against Ciryl Gane, which took place at UFC Freedom 250 in June. According to Pereira, the veteran official failed to properly handle a critical and controversial sequence during the heat of their bout. Pereira asserted that Gane struck him illegally in the back of the head immediately after scoring a knockdown—an infraction that the fighter firmly believes should have resulted in an immediate disqualification for Gane.

Instead of intervening with a point deduction or a disqualification, the referee allowed the contest to continue without penalizing Gane for the blow. Capitalizing on the momentum, Gane ultimately secured a technical knockout victory to close out the contest. The lingering fallout from that controversial finish has echoed across the mixed martial arts landscape. Throughout the remainder of 2026, Dean has continued to encounter a deeply hostile reception from fans at various UFC venues. While the incident involving Pereira and Gane served as a major catalyst, other debated officiating decisions over recent months have likely contributed to the broader wave of criticism directed at the long-tenured referee.

Despite sparking a massive debate within the community, Pereira admits that he holds mixed feelings about the intense backlash directed at Dean. While the former champion feels a certain degree of sympathy for the official as he navigates the relentless public pressure, Pereira remains steadfast in his decision to speak out publicly about the matter.

During an interview with veteran combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani, conducted in Portuguese, Pereira elaborated that his motivation for criticizing the referee stemmed primarily from genuine concerns regarding fighter safety and the immense responsibilities that fall upon officials inside the cage. Pereira acknowledged that Dean is simply performing his assigned job duties, but he emphasized that the ultimate priority during any professional mixed martial arts bout must be safeguarding the competitors from unnecessary and preventable harm.

Even though he occasionally sympathizes with the referee amid the ongoing storm of stadium boos and online scrutiny, Pereira maintains that raising the issue was a necessary step for athlete welfare.

“I see everything that’s going on, and sometimes I do feel bad because I know it’s his job, but when I spoke, I was just advocating because he’s the guy to be there who’s supposed to be protecting the fighters and avoid that something worse could happen to a fighter,” Pereira told Helwani during their discussion. “I had to speak my mind. But yeah, I do feel bad for him sometimes, in certain ways.”

Alex Pereira Feels Sympathy for Herb Dean but Doesn’t Want Him Refereeing His Future UFC Fights

Nevertheless, Pereira’s personal preference regarding his own career moving forward remains crystal clear. The former champion stated candidly that if he is given any say in the matter, he does not want Dean overseeing any of his future fights inside the Octagon.

“I don’t know how things roll on fight night, but if I can have a choice, I definitely don’t want him refereeing my fights no more,” Pereira noted.

When discussing the logistics of event promotion, the former titleholder admitted that he is not entirely familiar with the internal processes by which the promotion or athletic commissions assign officials on fight night. However, he reiterated his desire to steer clear of Dean’s officiating jurisdiction whenever circumstances allow him to voice a preference.

As he prepares to turn the page, Pereira is currently deep into training camp for a fresh and formidable challenge. He is scheduled to face heavy-hitting contender Sergei Pavlovich in the co-main event of UFC 335, which is slated to take place on December 12 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Even so, the Brazilian’s current frustrations extend well beyond the controversial finish against Gane and the subsequent debate surrounding Dean’s officiating performance.

Pereira also used the opportunity to express his disappointment regarding how the organization handled the matchmaking process for his upcoming return. Prior to the announcement of the Pavlovich bout, Pereira had hoped to secure either a direct rematch with Gane or a high-stakes matchup against Josh Hokit. Ultimately, neither of those desired opportunities materialized for the former champion.

Refining his thoughts on the matchmaking situation, Pereira explained that he fully understands the promotional organization is operating within the strict parameters and terms of his current contract. He reiterated that he has consistently demonstrated a willingness to step into the Octagon and fight whoever the promotion places in front of him. What truly caused his frustration, however, was being given initial indications that a championship rematch with Gane or a meeting with Hokit was a realistic possibility, only for those prospective options to dissolve before a deal could be finalized.

While Pereira appears fully focused and prepared to move forward with his scheduled test against Pavlovich in Las Vegas, his candid remarks make it transparently clear that lingering frustrations persist regarding both the outcome of his previous high-profile battle and the administrative decisions that have shaped his trajectory through the division since that night.
