While skeptics across the boxing world dismiss a potential showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Ryan Garcia as little more than a lucrative cash grab, former opponent Zab Judah is offering a vastly different perspective. According to Judah, the undefeated Hall of Famer must have a calculated, strategic reason for wanting to step back into the ring with the younger contender.
The bizarre and unexpected matchup continues to be discussed as a viable option for Garcia, a fighter who captured significant attention by claiming his WBC world title through a hard-fought victory that dethroned Mario Barrios back in February. Garcia’s momentum only continued to build when he returned to action last month. The 28-year-old successfully retained his welterweight strap with an explosive second-round finish over Conor Benn, a performance that immediately turned heads and ignited discussions about his future in the sport. Following that victory, Garcia wasted little time calling for a unification match against WBA champion Teofimo Lopez.
While that high-stakes showdown against Lopez could potentially materialize as early as February, Garcia’s legal representative and advisor, Guadalupe Valencia, recently revealed to Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger that a bout with Mayweather is also firmly on the cards for next year. Should terms be successfully agreed upon by both camps, this would mark Mayweather’s first professional boxing outing since his 2017 blockbuster fight. Because it is being discussed as a professional contest rather than an exhibition, it can only happen if the legendary 50-0 fighter agrees to put his unblemished professional record and legacy on the line once again.
The prospect of the fight itself still strikes many industry analysts as largely nonsensical, primarily due to the near two-decade age gap between the two competitors. Yet Judah, who famously shared the ring with Mayweather in 2006 before losing a unanimous decision, sees deeper layers to the situation. In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Judah explained that the soon-to-be 49-year-old Mayweather likely has an ace up his sleeve that the general public cannot yet see.
Expressing his viewpoint to Fight Hub TV, Judah emphasized the analytical nature of his former rival. "If he takes on this fight, it’s because he knows something. Floyd Mayweather does not just jump in the ring and make stupid, outlandish moves," Judah stated. He further elaborated on the meticulous nature of the legend’s career choices, noting that every step Mayweather takes is calculated well in advance. "All of his moves are strategic; all of his moves are planned out. I don’t know what would make him want to tangle with a twenty-eight-year-old, being nearly fifty years old himself. But I feel like, if he does sign the contract, he knows something that we don’t know."
Judah’s compelling logic is rooted in familiarity and proximity. With Garcia having previously spent time training at the prestigious Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Judah believes that Mayweather has had ample opportunity to observe the younger fighter up close, potentially identifying specific chinks in his armor that can be exploited. Whether these strategic insights will ultimately materialize into a finalized contract and an official fight announcement remains to be seen, but as the boxing calendar for next year begins to take shape, the possibility of Mayweather returning to professional boxing to face Garcia continues to capture the imagination of the sport.
