Wood vs Warrington Boxing Results

WOOD VS WARRINGTON RESULTS: SATURDAY 06 OCTOBER 2023

WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF WOOD VS WARRINGTON?

In the main event, Leigh Wood defeated Josh Warrington via TKO at the end of the 7th round to retain his WBA Featherweight Championship. Wood captured the belt for the second time in May 2023 vs Mauricio Lara, and was defending his belt in a voluntary defence against Warrington.

WAS WOOD VS WARRINGTON A GOOD FIGHT?

It was. Wood, who was trailing on all 3 judges scorecards, had a decent opening round, shading the action over Warrington. From the second round onwards, it was a completely different story. Wood only picked up a single round for the rest of the bout, as Warrington took complete control of proceedings. Warrington was outworking Wood, landing combinations and causing damage to Leigh Wood’s right eye as the rounds wore on. Warrington’s rough and up-close style was working a treat, and backed by his massive hometown support from Leeds, he seemed to be getting stronger as Wood was running out of ideas.

Entering the 7th round, a points victory was almost already out of reach for Wood, but a point deduction for Warrington for rabbit punching added some hope. With seconds left on the clock, Warrington became the first man to be rocked in the fight. Wood and Warrington began trading, and Wood landed a right hook that buzzed Josh Warrington. Wood unleashed a further flurry, and Warrington fell to the canvas. Warrington rose to his feet quickly, but immediately headed to his own corner, and never faced the referee. Warrington turned around shortly after the count of eight, and the referee waved the fight off, with Warrington protesting the decision.

WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF THE UNDERCARD FOR WOOD VS WARRINGTON?

Terri Harper fought Cecilia Braekhus to a Split Decision Draw, retaining her WBA World Super Welterweight Championship, but also failing to capture the vacant WBO World Super Welterweight Championship. The bout was difficult to score, with most rounds being closely contested. One judge Bob Williams favoured Harper by 2 rounds, but the other other judges overruled him and it was declared a Draw.

Kieron Conway stopped Linus Udofia in the sixth round of their contest, with Udofia being deemed in no position to continue due to his swollen eye. Conway picked up the vacant WBA Inter-Continental Middleweight crown, and inflicted Udofia’s second defeat of his career.

Hopey Price defeated Connor Coghill via TKO in the final 12 round of their bout, having knocked Coghill down four times in the fight. Price pressed for the stoppage, scoring a knockdown in round 11, and two further ones in the final round before the referee waved it off.
