Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr. 2 Start Time and Preview

Live on: 02 September 2023

WHO IS BOXING?

On 02 September 2023, emanating from the AO Arena in Manchester, Liam Smith (33-3-1) faces off against Chris Eubank Jr (32-3), in a rematch of their dramatic January bout. The boxing will be contested for 12 rounds, in the 160 lbs. Middleweight division. Will it be Repeat or Revenge?

The A-side of the rematch, Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith, was born in Liverpool on 27 July 1988. His most notable achievements include winning the WBO Super Welterweight championship in 2015, and his victory over Eubank Jr in January 2023. Chris Eubank Jr was the A-side in the original contest, and was born in Hove on 18 September 1989. Eubank’s most notable achievements include holding an IBO World Super Middleweight championship, and boxing in significant all-British bouts against George Groves, Billy Joe Saunders, and Liam Smith, albeit being unsuccessful each time.

WHERE IS THE EVENT?

The event once again takes place from Manchester’s AO Arena, which also hosted the first contest on 21 January 2023. Tickets ranged from £40 to in excess of £500 when purchased through official channels. The crowd is expected to heavily favour Liam Smith, partially due to Manchester’s distance from Liverpool, and partially due to Eubank Jr’s previously villainous public persona.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BUILD-UP?

Sky Sports and Boxxer have been heavily promoting this event. Their YouTube content includes their famed The Gloves Are Off II, with Smith and Eubank Jr having participated for their first fight. Chris Eubank Jr has participated in a long interview on The Overlap, with Gary Neville. Sky Sports have also been releasing footage from Smith and Eubank Jr’s camps. The running theme of pieces of content is Eubank Jr showing more professionalism and less of a showman personality, unwilling to taunt Liam Smith as he did the first time. Liam Smith appears the same as the first contest, level-headed and happy to prod Eubank Jr’s wounded pride and ego.

Chris Eubank Jr has dispensed with the services of his trainer Roy Jones Jr, or vice-versa depending on who you believe, and has adopted Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford’s trainer, Brain ‘BoMack’ McIntyre for an abridged, four and a half week camp. Smith on the other hand has made no significant changes in training.

WHO IS THE FAVOURITE?

Smith has been made the favourite by the bookies for Liam Smith vs Chris Eubank Jr., with odds of around 8/13 for the victory against Chris Eubank Jr’s 13/10. This is a reverse of their first meeting, where Chris Eubank Jr. was heavily favoured, and Smith only being considered an outsider for a points decision.
