Wood vs Warrington Start Time and Preview

LIVE ON: 07 October 2023

WHO IS BOXING?

On 07 October 2023 live from the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, Leigh Wood (27-3) puts his WBA World Featherweight championship on the line against former IBF World Featherweight champion Josh Warrington (31-2-1).

Leigh Wood regained his Featherweight championship by avenging his defeat to Mauricio Lara in May 2023 at the AO Arena in Manchester. Josh Warrington last fought in December 2022, when he lost his IBF crown to Luis Alberto Lopez in front of his hometown fans at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BUILD-UP TO WOOD VS WARRINGTON?

The build-up for Wood vs Warrington has been respectful. Josh Warrington has gifted Leigh Wood a few odd items, including a cake and some hair product, as the fight was announced on his birthday. Although there is no genuine beef between the two boxers, the fight is being billed as Leigh Wood’s Nottingham vs Josh Warrington’s Leeds, a local rivalry between cities.

WHO IS THE FAVOURITE IN WOOD VS WARRINGTON?

Leigh Wood has been priced as the significant favourite by the bookmakers, with odds of 1/3 to win by any method of victory. Josh Warrington is the outsider, with odds of 11/4 meaning a steep payout for any backers.

WHERE IS WOOD VS WARRINGTON BEING HELD?

Wood vs Warrington is being held live at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. The original intended venue for the bout was Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, being treated as a homecoming for Leigh Wood. The ground was unsurprisingly unavailable with the Premier League season already in action, and Nottingham Forest unwilling to risk damaging their playing surface.

Sheffield was selected as a neutral option, rather than a homecoming. A relative mid-point between Nottingham and Leeds to allow the hometown fanbases of each fighter ample opportunity to attend.

Sheffield’s Utilita Arena last played host to boxing for Dalton Smith vs Sam Maxwell on 01 July 2023, which was also a Matchroom Boxing show.

ANY HIGHLIGHTS ON THE WOOD VS WARRINGTON UNDERCARD?

Terri Harper vs Cecilia Braekhus is long overdue, having been set for the Katie Taylor vs Chantelle Cameron undercard. Braekhus pulled out with illness during the fight weekend, leaving Harper to have a makeshift bout in May 2023. This is for Harper’s WBA belt and the vacant WBO, and Harper will be keen to unify having had a difficult year finding credible opposition.

ANYTHING ELSE?

The winner of Wood vs Warrington must face WBA mandatory challenger Otabek Kholmatov. There is already some controversy as despite being made the mandatory challenger, Josh Warrington was allowed to skip the queue. The basis for the decision seems to only be the size of the fight, selling Wood vs Kholmatov is a harder prospect than a domestic rivarly, but this seems grossly unfair when a mandatory challenger is already in position to challenge.

The WBA has ordered the winner face Kholmatov within 4 months or vacate the belt. Both Wood and Warrington may consider vacating if they win their upcoming bout, especially if they are offered more money-spinning bouts. A move up in weight, and challenging Joe Cordina for his IBF Super Featherweight championship is likely to be more appealing to either Wood or Warrington.
