Jai Opetaia vs Jordan Thompson Start Time and Preview

LIVE ON: Saturday 30 September 2023

WHO IS BOXING?

On 30 September 2023 live from Wembley Arena, Australian Jai Opetaia (22-0) vs British Jordan Thompson (15-0) will be boxing for the IBF and Ring Magazine World Cruiserweight Championships.

This will be Opetaia’s first championship defence since capturing gold last year, while Thompson is challenging for the first time, having defended his IBF European belt against domestic contender Luke Watkins last time out.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE BUILD-UP?

The biggest talking point has been the decision of Boxxer to withdraw mandatory challenger Richard Riakporhe from a purse bid, forfeiting his mandatory position. This has allowed Jordan Thompson to seize his opportunity, jump the rankings and face Opetaia ahead of schedule. Opetaia vs Thompson was never on the cards for 2023 until Riakporhe ceded his position. Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, Eddie Hearn stated this may have taken 2 years to make if Riakporhe hadn’t cleared the way for Jordan Thompson to challenge.

Opetaia has been waiting for an opportunity to get back in the ring, having been delayed by Riakporhe’s decision and medical issues from his last bout. He captured the championship by defeating Maris Bredis, but broke his jaw twice in the process. He has been desperate for activity since being cleared, and was keen to defend his belt after recovering from injury.

WHO IS THE FAVOURITE?

Jai Opetaia is deemed the favourite for Opetaia vs Thompson, and there is growing talk that the opportunity has come too soon for Jordan Thompson. Opetaia is priced at 1/4 to win by any method of victory, with Thompson at 11/4.
