Canelo vs Charlo Boxing Results

CANELO VS CHARLO RESULTS: SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2023

WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF CANELO VS CHARLO?

Canelo shaded a cagey first and second round against Charlo. The third round the DAZN stream helpfully went down and missed the entire round. Canelo continued to dominate as Jermell Charlo took to sticking on the outside and out of range. He struggled to get his shots off throughout the bout, and never really let his hands go. Charlo took a knee in the 7th round following a delayed reaction to a heavy right hand shot. This was just the second time he had been on the canvas in his career. Charlo continued to survive and stay out of range for the remainder of the fight, with no real intention of attempting to win the contest, just to survive the distance with Canelo. Canelo was given the decision by 9 rounds according to two judges, and 11 by the final judge. Canelo wins with his third consecutive Unanimous Decision, whilst Charlo is defeated for just the second time in his career.

WAS CANELO VS CHARLO A GOOD FIGHT?

No, not really. For a PPV bout, it proved to be disappointing. Jermell Charlo didn’t really engage enough to make it an engrossing contest, and Canelo was never troubled. Despite Charlo being a much bigger threat than Canelo’s last opponent John Ryder, he didn’t make it count, and the question quickly became how Canelo was going to win, rather than who was going to win. Charlo’s decision to remain on the outside and limit Canelo’s threat also made the contest far less entertaining, with periods on inactivity during the rounds as Canelo tried to pin Charlo down.

WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF THE UNDERCARD FOR CANELO VS CHARLO?

Frank Sanchez vs Scott Alexander. Sanchez knocked Alexander down in round 2. Frank Sanchez defeated Alexander after his corner retired at the end of the fourth round.

Elijah Garcia vs Jose Resendiz. Garcia dropped Resendiz in the eight round with body shots and a final right hook. Shortly after, Elijah Garcia continued to press and veteran referee stopped the bout. Garcia wins via TKO round 8.

Yordenis Ugas vs Mario Barrios. Barrios managed to drop Ugas easily in the second round with a jab. Ugas was dropped in the 10th round with a mean left hook, and he was deducted a point for losing his mouthpiece twice, slowing down Barrios in the process. Ugas survived until the final bell, but was badly hurted and nursing a heavily swollen right eye. 117-108, 118-107 (x2) read the scorecard in Barrios’ favour, moving to (28-2).

Jesus Ramos Jr vs Erickson Lubin was a largely uneventful affair that the crowd detested. 115-113, 116-112, 117-111 read the scores in favour of Lubin after 12 rounds, despite Lubin having a low output. Ramos was favoured by the commentators and the crowd, and the scorecard was a shock to all three.

WHAT WAS THE FIGHT OF THE NIGHT?

Ugas vs Barrios had a lot of action compared to some of the other bouts, although it was very one-sided.
