Denver Broncos running back RJ Harvey has been officially ruled out for Sunday’s crucial Week 8 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs due to a knee injury. While the absence of the second-year playmaker will test the depth of the Broncos’ backfield, early reports offer optimism for the team, as the injury is not considered severe or long-term.

The issue first materialized during the middle of the practice week when Harvey was added to Denver’s injury report on Wednesday. He managed a limited participation session in practice on Thursday, raising initial hopes that he might be able to suit up for the division rivalry game. However, as the week progressed, the team ultimately decided to exercise caution with the young running back, leaving him off the active roster for Sunday afternoon’s 4:25 PM kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium.

The timing of the injury halts some significant momentum for Harvey, who has been showcasing his explosive big-play ability in recent weeks. Most recently, during Denver’s 30-16 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Harvey contributed through the air with a stunning 52-yard touchdown reception, finishing the contest with two catches for 54 yards alongside three rushing carries. A week prior, in a gritty 17-14 overtime win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football, he produced solid numbers with nine total touches, rumbling for 25 yards and a touchdown on the ground while adding three receptions for 31 yards through the air.

Advanced metrics from the 2026 NFL season further underscore his efficiency and value within the Denver offense. Operating with a role that maximizes his unique skill set, Harvey has posted notable efficiency markers, including an average yards per route run of 2.55, highlighting his effectiveness as a pass-catching threat out of the backfield. Despite an average depth of target sitting at -2.6 yards, his ability to turn short screens and check-downs into explosive gains has made him an integral weapon for the Broncos’ offensive scheme.

Sunday’s opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs, presents a formidable defensive challenge. Entering the contest boasting an imposing overall quarterback rating against of 45.2, the Chiefs’ defense ranks among the elite units in the league at defending the pass. Without Harvey available to exploit mismatches out of the backfield, the Broncos will have to look toward other options on their roster to navigate the tough Kansas City defense.

Harvey’s journey to the NFL and his current standing with Denver is rooted in a remarkable collegiate transition and a strong rookie campaign. Originally recruited to Virginia as a quarterback, the densely built, 5-foot-8, 205-pound athlete found his true calling after transferring to UCF. Shifting to running back, Harvey ignited his collegiate career by turning 576 carries into 3,789 yards, averaging a stellar 6.6 yards per carry, and punching in 43 touchdowns across 38 games. He was equally lethal as a receiver for the Knights, hauling in 61 receptions for 720 yards and five scores.

Recognizing his explosive potential and low center of gravity that makes him exceptionally difficult to bring down in the open field, the Broncos selected Harvey in the second round, 60th overall, during the 2025 NFL Draft. He subsequently signed a four-year, $7.36 million contract with the franchise in July of 2025. Entering his second professional season, Harvey has continued to refine his craft. During the offseason, he drew inspiration from studying some of the league’s elite dual-threat running backs, including Christian McCaffrey, Kenneth Walker, and Jahmyr Gibbs, aiming to expand his skill set and solidify his role in the Denver offense.

While Harvey works his way back to full health, the Broncos will manage their backfield rotation against the Chiefs. The coaching staff is expected to lean on veteran presence and alternative depth to shoulder the load in Sunday’s divisional showdown, trusting that Harvey’s absence will be brief as the team looks ahead to the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
