Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Reclaims WBC Super-Middleweight Title with Unanimous Decision Victory Over Christian Mbilli in Riyadh

Mexican boxing icon Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez delivered a classic counter-punching display in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to defeat Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision and reclaim the WBC super-middleweight championship.

The victory marks a triumphant return to the top of the division for the 36-year-old four-weight world champion, coming just over a year after he lost his world titles to Terence Crawford. Competing in the 69th professional bout of his storied career, Alvarez put on a masterclass of defensive posture, ring generalship, and sharp timing to hand the 31-year-old Mbilli the first defeat of his professional career.

The three ringside judges scored the 12-round contest 115–112, 116–111, and 117–110, all in favor of Alvarez, reflecting a performance in which the veteran Mexican gradually dismantled his opponent’s relentless aggression with superior accuracy and ring wisdom.

For Alvarez, the triumph represents the 64th win of an extraordinary career that has spanned decades at the pinnacle of the sport. Entering the ring in Riyadh, Alvarez found himself in unfamiliar territory, competing without a world title belt to his name for the first time since 2015. Following his loss to Crawford and a subsequent layoff of more than a year, significant questions had been raised by pundits and observers regarding whether the Mexican superstar was experiencing a decline in his speed, reflexes, and overall effectiveness.

Those doubts were answered emphatically inside the ring as Alvarez demonstrated that his defensive instincts and counter-punching acumen remain among the sharpest in combat sports.

From the opening bell, Mbilli sought to establish a high-volume, pressuring attack. The Cameroon-born fighter, who fights out of Canada, attempted to swarm the veteran by pushing him against the ropes and throwing punches in bunches. Mbilli entered the contest making the first defense of the WBC super-middleweight title, having been elevated to full champion status by the sanctioning body in January. Eager to prove his standing at the elite level, Mbilli maintained a relentless forward march in the early rounds, attempting to overwhelm Alvarez with work rate and physical strength.

Alvarez, however, appeared entirely unbothered by the early onslaught. Relying on upper-body movement, subtle shoulder rolls, and precise footwork, the former pound-for-pound king absorbed or deflected the majority of Mbilli’s punches while pinned near the ropes. Showcasing his trademark confidence, Alvarez dismissively shook his head after absorbing Mbilli’s initial flurries, goading the younger champion to press forward and leave himself open to counter-attacks.

While Mbilli undeniably threw the higher quantity of punches throughout the early half of the bout, it was Alvarez who consistently landed the clearer, far more damaging blows. By the middle rounds, the Mexican began finding his rhythm with devastating accuracy. In the sixth round, Alvarez broke through Mbilli’s guard with a pair of hard right uppercuts that visibly rattled the defending champion, clearly establishing the difference in punch power between the two fighters.

As the match progressed into the second half, Mbilli’s persistent pressure yielded diminishing returns. Alvarez adjusted to his opponent’s predictable entry angles, slipping jabs and planting heavy hooks to the body and head. Mbilli’s frustration grew as he struggled to land clean shots on the elusive veteran, leading to clinches and rough tactics.

The defending champion suffered a major setback when the referee intervened to dock him a point for repeatedly striking Alvarez on the back of the head. The point deduction further widened the margin on the scorecards and forced Mbilli into an even more aggressive posture in search of a decisive blow.

Despite the point penalty, Alvarez remained firmly in control during the championship rounds, managing the distance and pacing the bout with veteran composure. Cruising toward the final bell, Alvarez avoided unnecessary exchanges while continuing to sting Mbilli with crisp counters whenever the champion lunged forward. Although Mbilli managed to land a couple of sharp right hands in the closing moments of the 12th round, it was far too late to alter the outcome of the contest.

When the final scorecards were announced, Alvarez expressed profound emotion over capturing another world title at this stage of his career, describing the triumph as comparable to the very beginning of his journey.

"It’s so difficult to explain," Alvarez said following the announcement of his victory. "It’s something unbelievable, this feeling. Like my first title. Thirty-one years as a professional. Sixteen years ago, I won my first title. Now, I won the title again. I’m so proud."

The defeat brings an end to Mbilli’s undefeated record, dropping him to 30-1. Having built his career on relentless pressure and physical dominance, the 31-year-old found himself outmaneuvered by one of the most decorated tacticians of the modern era. Despite showing immense heart and a tireless engine over 12 rounds, Mbilli was unable to solve the defensive puzzles presented by the Mexican superstar.

The high-profile event took place against an increasingly complex geopolitical and security backdrop in the region. In the weeks leading up to the bout, serious concerns were raised regarding whether the event could safely proceed in Riyadh due to intensifying conflict involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement.

Security risks were highlighted just two days prior to fight night when the Saudi Press Agency reported that Saudi Civil Defence forces had intercepted two ballistic missiles over the capital city of Riyadh. That incident followed a devastating missile strike earlier in October on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, an attack that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300 others.

The escalating regional instability has led to widespread disruptions across the international sporting calendar in Saudi Arabia. Several major sporting events scheduled to take place in the kingdom were cancelled due to safety concerns, including the high-profile Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition, the final round of the 2026 World Rally Championship, and the 2026 Urban Cycling World Championships.

However, while other international sports governing bodies opted to pull their events from the region, the combat sports sector chose to proceed with its scheduled calendar, allowing the marquee clash between Alvarez and Mbilli to go forward under tight security protocol in the Saudi capital.

With the WBC super-middleweight belt once again in his possession, Alvarez refrained from calling out specific opponents for his next outing during his post-fight comments. Instead, the newly crowned champion indicated that he intends to take a brief period of rest before returning to the gym to resume his training regimen.

"I’m going to rest. I’m going to keep learning. I’m going to keep working hard," Alvarez stated. "And right now I’m going to be a couple of weeks off and then come back."
