Oleksandr Usyk vs. David Benavidez: The 2027 Cruiserweight Super-Fight Taking Shape

A blockbuster showdown between pound-for-pound greats Oleksandr Usyk and David Benavidez could become a reality by 2027, with a surprising tactical twist that would see the legendary Ukrainian star move back down to cruiserweight rather than Benavidez ascending to the heavyweight division.

While a potential clash between Usyk and Benavidez has been floated as an intriguing idea in boxing circles before, previous discussions naturally assumed that the younger, hard-hitting Benavidez—now 29 years old—would make the jump up to the heavyweight ranks where Usyk has successfully campaigned since 2019, conquering the division and etching his name into boxing history.

However, plans have evolved, and the former undisputed cruiserweight king harbors a different ambition. Usyk would much rather face Benavidez, who boasts an undefeated 32-0 record with 26 knockouts, down at the cruiserweight limit. The motivation for the Ukrainian icon is clear and historic: he wants to go undisputed at cruiserweight for a second time, mirroring the incredible feat he already accomplished in the division before repeating the undisputed sweep at heavyweight.

The landscape of the cruiserweight division makes this ambition logistically fascinating. Benavidez currently holds the WBA and WBC titles at cruiserweight, and he is scheduled to step into the ring against WBC titleholder Michal Cieslak in a major three-belt unification bout on December 5th in Arizona. That high-stakes matchup leaves just the IBF title outside of the immediate unification picture, which is currently vacant, leaving the winner of Benavidez-Cieslak in an immensely powerful position atop the weight class.

The path to Usyk, however, may have to navigate other mandatory obligations first. Benavidez has already agreed verbally to a massive fight against elite cruiserweight contender Jai Opetaia next May. That being said, with Zuffa Boxing experiencing recent reported business struggles and organizational hurdles, the exact timeline and venue for those plans remain fluid and could end up anywhere at this point. Still, the bout has also been officially ordered by the WBC, which mandated that the winner of the upcoming Benavidez versus Cieslak showdown must face Opetaia next.

For Usyk, whose career resume stands at an immaculate 25-0 with 16 knockouts, the road back to cruiserweight comes after a transitional and eventful phase in his storied career. Usyk notably vacated all of the heavyweight championship titles earlier this year, stepping away from the division’s throne. His sole appearance for 2026 wound up being a curious novelty bout where he squared off against kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven. In that fight, Usyk secured an 11th-round stoppage victory, though it came after 10 rounds of unexpected struggle that left boxing analysts and fans with several lingering questions about his current form and competitive drive as he enters the twilight of his career.

Given the current scheduling landscape, upcoming mandatories, and promotional developments, it is entirely possible that a potential bout against Benavidez would wait until the late summer or early fall of 2027. Because Usyk’s birthday falls in January, he will turn 40 years old if and when this marquee fight actually takes place, regardless of whether it materializes late next year or earlier in the calendar.

The prospect of a 40-year-old Usyk attempting to recapture his former kingdom against a prime, devastating puncher like Benavidez adds an extraordinary layer of drama to a matchup that already captures the imagination of the global boxing community. Whether the logistical stars align for late 2027 remains to be seen, but the foundations for one of the most compelling cross-generational fights of the decade are steadily being put into place.
