Global Fight League Announces Long-Awaited Debut Event in Argentina Following Previous Setbacks

The Global Fight League is once again ready to take on the world of mixed martial arts, setting the stage for a fresh chapter in the sport’s evolving landscape.

On Thursday, the GFL dropped an official announcement for its debut event, which is officially scheduled to take place at the Club Atletico Lanus in Buenos Aires on Dec. 18. Following the league’s unique team-based format, the opening event is set to feature the Buenos Aires Gauchos welcoming the Miami Monsters to Argentina for a high-stakes night of combat sports action.

While the promotion has confirmed the location, date, and marquee team matchup, it is not yet known which specific fighters are officially booked for the rest of the fight card. However, early roster details have started to emerge, adding intrigue to the upcoming card. Former UFC title contender and longtime MMA veteran Marlon Moraes has recently been announced as part of the Miami Monsters roster.

Moraes, 38, made a successful and much-needed comeback this past August, securing a unanimous decision victory over Maximiliano Perez. That win successfully snapped a painful seven-fight losing streak across multiple stints in major organizations, including the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the Professional Fighters League, dating back to 2020. His addition to the Miami squad instantly provides the team with a seasoned veteran and former elite contender who knows what it takes to compete at the absolute highest level of the sport.

The leadership behind the promotion expressed immense enthusiasm regarding the official rescheduling of their launch. “A new era in mixed martial arts officially begins,” the promotion wrote in an Instagram caption to break the news to fans and media alike. “After years of vision, determination, and building something truly different, we are proud to announce the first official event in Global Fight League history.”

Adding to the anticipation, the promotion’s social media post also noted that comprehensive roster reveals for the competing teams are officially set to be rolled out on Monday, giving fans and analysts their first real look at the talent pool the league has managed to secure.

The Global Fight League is the brainchild of former World Series of Fighting executive Darren Owen, who initially launched the promotion in 2025 with grand ambitions to disrupt the traditional individual-centric model of MMA by introducing a team-vs-team framework. During the initial rollout phases, several high-profile fighters and former world champions were announced as part of the broader GFL project. Among those heavyweight names were former UFC champions Tyron Woodley, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Anthony Pettis, and Holly Holm, alongside numerous other notable veterans and fan favorites from across the global MMA landscape.

Unfortunately for the GFL, the ambitious startup faced severe turbulence before it ever managed to get off the ground. Earlier in its development cycle, the league announced a pair of inaugural events intended to take place on May 24 and May 25. Those high-profile cards were subsequently cancelled amid mounting questions and operational hurdles.

The situation drew intense scrutiny from the combat sports community when veteran fighter and signee Urijah Faber later spoke out publicly about the organizational collapse. Faber revealed that Owen and the organization may have been exaggerating or manipulating the financial figures when it came to transparency over how much capital they were actually putting into funding the project, casting a dark cloud over the league’s future prospects.

Despite the heavy criticism, public skepticism, and the catastrophic failure of their initial launch window, Owen and his executive team remain completely undeterred. The announcement of the December card in Buenos Aires signals that the promotion is pressing forward with its foundational concept, attempting to salvage its original vision and establish a foothold in the competitive international MMA market.

In the official statement accompanying the December 18 fight card announcement, leadership reiterated its appreciation for those who have stuck by the organization through its turbulent developmental phase. Addressing supporters directly, the promotion shared a brief message: "To everyone who has believed in the vision and supported the journey, this moment is for you."
